Yet another ToEleven scratch build

Because of seeing this thread I lost about 2 hours of my life yesterday looking up casting stuff. I am still not 100% sure how you got the helmet form to stay in that cast. Fantastic work keep it up!

I'm not exactly sure which part of the process you're referring to, but I'd be happy to share whatever I've learned.

Back panels are basically done. I'm using most of Raizo's (catbread :p) recommendations on the Tamiya acrylics. My RLM-73 turned into more of a RLM-WTF, but I'm going to live with it on this build. I think I need something a little lighter and maybe more blueish. Also trying to stencil/transfer graphite or carbon paper on the silver Testors Diamond Dust layer was difficult to say the least.

It's ok , but I really have a lot to learn on the painting end of things.

Edit: I'm redoing the RLM-WTF...I just can't take it. :facepalm

I've been working on the dome and cheeks this week. Anytime I see the ESB in a photo the dome and cheeks have a different hue than what I see in the standard humbrol everyone uses, so I wanted to try to match that. I did a little research on Panzer Olive Green and German Field Gray, and they sometimes are represented a little more on the lighter end of things. I'm thinking that the original paints leaned a little more in this direction. Who knows...it's interesting to play around with the mix. I may end up doing a wash on it to darken it down a bit if the face and ears contrast don't bring it into submission. I used Tamiya XF-18,XF-71,XF-25 and added some white to lighten it up. I noticed Tamiya had XF-65 Field Gray which looks pretty blue on the chart, but I may experiment with on my next go around.

I'm only masking off the gray since it seems to have the least amount of detail. I figured I would attempt to put the silver on topically. Superjedi makes it look so easy right?

It really doesn't look quite this pale in person.

Maaaaybe after some weathering.

That green looks really close. Could be the lighting but it needs a tiny bit more yellow in the mix. Looks alittle too blue/ gray. I'm excited to see what some weathering and the rest of the colors painted will do to the green

Yeah I know exactly what you're talking about. I think I can tone it with an acrylic wash after all is said and done. I'm tempted to do it now, but I think it would be better to wait until I have the main portion of painting done.

Really excited to see my colors palette being used on a helmet paint up! Looking great :)

Thanks man. I really appreciate you're work with the color matching. It has saved me a lot of time...also I really like working with the Tamiya acrylics!

Painting is slow going since I'm really just learning the craft. I did a couple layers on the face and back trim with the intention to do topical with silver.

For the burgundy layer I went with Model Master acrylic Insignia Red with a dash or so of Deep Blue to taste. The Tamiya thinner works pretty well with model master acrylics for airbrushing.

Model Master Insignia Red acrylic with a couple drops per ml of tamiya hull red(which is really brown looking).

For the topical work I ended up using model master chrome silver enamel which is really easy to apply and covers nicely.

At 1st I tried model master acrylic silver and vallejo model color and both either wouldn't cover or clumped and dried bumpy (I'm sure due to my lack of skill). I was really frustrated and wanted to sand the whole thing down and start over.

I'm not sure which side of the layered vs topical debate I'll end up on. I can see pros and cons to both. I've done a few mediocre layered paint ups, and I think that is an easier way to get the helmet done...but, it's hard to get the fine details. Topical requires a more artistic skill, but is easier to detail.

Another helpful tool for applying masking fluid. Used in conjunction with a pointy bamboo kabob skewer.

I found this guy at my local Michaels craft store in the artist paint aisle. Hobby Lobby also carried the bottle in the modeling paint aisle.
