Here are some better pictures of it most recently. Unfortunately due to the cold temperatures it has become impractical to go and sand outside, and so this project will be on hold till Spring arrives with warmer weather. The last photo is it next to my first scratch build, which is considerably smaller (and which I can barely fit my head into (and my head is on the smaller side)). Just for comparison's sake.
Sorry for the late reply. I simply brushed on a couple layers of oil-based polyurethane on the cardboard areas. It'll come off easily if you sand it (and depending on the thickness of the layers) but it does its job well. I'm sure there are other options but that's what I had lying around, and plenty of people use it to my knowledge.

I'm getting the ball rolling on this again, now that school is giving me a bit of a break. I put on a coat of XTC-3D resin on it again, and primed it to get a better eye for the imperfections. I have since gotten bondo put on it. I have also been working on a new dent piece to install soon because of the lack of detail in the first one (which was initially good, but not up to my standard)

After: (there is slight observable gloss) chilling with my first scratch built helmet
Thanks mate. Having never casted anything before (I've done a ton of research but still) I'm pretty uncertain how it will turn out, but I intend to get that happening this summer. The reason that getting to that stage is taking so long is because I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and there always seems things that seem a bit off that need redoing. :cheers
