Let's talk about flare. This is it.

I think that animefan bucket looks pretty good with the added flare. Definitely within the realm of where it should he for the ESB look. But that FPH2 ROTJ .. yikes. I've never seen one that straight on before but that is really something else. I wonder how one might use a similar method to Reduce the flare?

Since we're talking about flare...and whether it's there...here's a pic I'd like to share...

I took some time today and increased the flare on my Animefan budget helmet by 1/2". Heated in the oven on 375 degrees for 2 minutes. Then I put a rod in the base to hold it at the desired width and ran it under some cold water to cool it back down. Once cooled down I removed the rod and VOILA...FLARE! Here's a pic of it next to the FPH2 that I'm currently painting for starchild99.

So Paul the flare is more apparent when the camera is further away? As this pic shows? Seems the closer the lens the flare is far less prominent.

It's more the case that the closer camera shots introduced distortion of the item shot. The 10 feet pics give a better representation of the overall shape.

The added flare of the MR recast isn't bad although slightly too much for me.
The FPH2 has too much flare; mine exhibited the same issue and the pulling out of the sides creates a flat face syndrome.

Wide angle lens on the camera for group shots of people will stretch things about a bit, as apposed things like close ups on hero shots where the frame is tight.....that maybe whats going on?

im confused....lol to me the fettpride 2 doesent have enough ....

It has too much. Here are comp shots next to a MR recast. Shot were taken at seven feet or so; the lighting wasn't great and you can tell the iso is working pretty hard but the flare differences should be obvious. Same as AFFOD's.

I don't personally have too much of an issue with the flare of the MR. I would say rather that the helmet, as a whole, lacks a bit of refinement. This is embodied most notably in the dent, which is one of the weakest points for me. I think overall the shape and size is good but that it might be the case that some of the more subtle characteristics were lost in the scan. An analogy I recently used was that it's a little like someone just after the Christmas period; a little bit too much sloth and gluttony so you gain a few pounds - you still look like you but a bit of time in the gym wouldn't hurt!

Yea i agree with Andy on this one. The ROTJ FPH2 seems to have too much flare. Honestly in ROTJ i never saw not one shot where it appeared to have any significant flare, unlike the ESB where it looks like there is more. I still think the ESB is an anomaly/one of kind due to something in the casting process like i spoke of above.

My personal opinion leans toward any of the MR recasts. The RS is one of those. Animefan and Darth Vorhees also offer MR recasts. Darth Vorhees has talked of making movie specific versions using the MR as a base. As I understand it he's reviewing his current helmet to reduce the flare and add the movie specific damage as well as doctoring the dent; essentially marrying the best features of the MR with the best feature of the FPH2. If he, or anyone else, pulls that off the that would be a fine looking lid.

Edit: speak of the devil. Tell us Lou, are you going to do it?

There are many opinions on helmets, so it's hard to define. Probably the best bet would be for someone to further alter the MR recast like the FP premium that animefan sells. Add a bit more flare( not a ton, if you look at the R ear on this cast its almost flat), alter the dent(it's rather deep) and narrow up portions of the visor cutout(eye portion).
This is not meant as a poke on any makers, just my opinion after staring for hours at helmets and speaking with others on these features.
as for RS, they use an MR derivative so it should be similar to the FP premie.
See the way the sides flare out on the FPH2? Look at the back of it, then compare it to similar views in the gallery. It's just overdone.

Haha yea im definitely going to give it one more go. Im going to add the wavy brow, reshape the top curve of the mandibles and reduce the flare on my ESB a touch, and then more so for what i guess will be a more general base helmet, closer to the Pre pro and ROTJ helmets. I probably wont add any physical damage to the latter so the owner could just add whichever version damage they want. Im going to try and fix up the dent, but thats going to prove difficult, but im gonna try it! lol Then, hopefully, that will be the end of the line in the quest for a nice ESB and basic Fett helmet for me lol. Im not trying to make the best helmet out there, or an exact replica really, just what i feel will be a good representation of what i see on screen, and a nice trooping helmet that has the look and feel im after. There is alot of other stuff im itching to do, some Fett some not, so i dont want to have to come back to the helmet lol

I always think im on the right track then its not the something...lol color,part,piece....guess thats the fun of it though I appreciate everyone helping
Ah, I think that happens to most of us. It's supposed to be one of the hardest builds to do right and if you're going to obsess over all the little details then you're in for the long haul. I am currently wasting myself trying to track down all of the (no longer made) floquil colours. Even the most recent bottles I have are pretty ancient.
