Eagle's ESB Boba WIP

A Hairy Situation!

My cape and braids arrived today from TunaFett57!

The cape still needs to be cut up and weathered, but it is the US half-tent found part.

I highly recommend you hit up Tuna for your braids and cape. He is very communicative, and his attention to detail is impeccable.

Thank you again Tuna!

That cape is gorgeous! Out of interest, how to you plan to cut it up? Can you burn it?
RafalFett has a template here on the forums. Tuna also supplies a printout. That can be found here:

Initially, I didn't plan on getting the found part. If I had gotten the replica, I was going to cut it up myself. But given that it is the found part, I may reach out to someone more experienced to cut it; I do not want to mess it up. Or I will find some fabric to cut up and practice on, I haven't fully decided yet.

The cape already shows signs of wear from use; it may need more, though.

SX-70 Viewfinder Extraction:

I got my SX-70 Polaroid camera in the mail today! You can get a non-functional one for about $50-$75 on eBay. Just make sure the eyepiece, the part you find, isn't damaged. I paid $50 for mine!

On the back, you will find the found part!

There is a way to extract this part without damaging the camera; unfortunately, I was not so lucky. This 2011 thread offers a step-by-step guide to removing it, but I wanted to add some clarification.
Polaroid SX-70 viewfinder

The viewfinder is held in place by two pins connected by a central metal tube. I have made a diagram for visualization:
Pin.png

The blue lines on the pins show the grooves you need to push out to remove the pins. All you need is a micro flathead screwdriver.
25363.jpg

Unfortunately, the right pin on my camera wouldn't budge. I probably could have hit it with some wd40, but I got impatient and forced it out, which damaged one of the arms that hold the viewfinder in.

25364.jpg

But! I got what I was after! The viewfinder has two little posts that you need to remove. They are very fragile; you can snap them off with your fingers, and then sand them down flush with the rest of the housing.
25366.jpg

As for the rest of the camera, I'm sure you could sell it for parts on eBay for $30-$40 and recoup some of your money. I am going to hang on to mine because it is actually a really cool display piece. I may also give it to a local bar that displays stuff like this or my sister, who loves old cameras. I haven't fully decided yet.

Here I am trying to take a photo of my Lego Boba. Unfortunately, I know nothing about photography or Polaroid cameras, so it looks like trash. I was also trying to take a photo with my camera, through the Polaroid camera, maybe that had something to do with it lol.

This is definitely a fun project for Fett builds. It seems to be one of the more accessible found parts you can find on eBay; it just takes a few minutes to extract.

I failed to research the seller beforehand and suffered the same fate.

Josh
Sorry to hear that. The worst part is I can see him active on Facebook Messenger. Every time someone is online, they have a little green dot next to their profile picture. He won't even open my messages. People say his quality is the best, and that makes up for the lack of communication. But it is completely unacceptable not to reply to a paid customer.

Anyway, if you still need your cape and braids, check out TunaFett57 on Instagram! I actually think his braids are better than Woodman's, and he gets them to you fast!

Jetpack Ports:

25540 (1).jpg

I managed to collect all the bottom ports for Boba's jetpack. All are the found parts besides the XLR. While not required for ESB, I believe they were present on the pack from the Supertrooper prototype through ROTJ.

We know the XLR was present in ESB, as evidenced by the cable in screencaps from the film. Ord Mantell discovered this.

This next part is pure speculation on my part, but we know Kuhnke parts were visible on the gauntlet of the Pre-Pro 2 suit. Kuhnke makes the red coupling on the bottom of the pack. I have minimal experience with the Pre-Pro suits, but I wonder whether the gauntlet assembly on the Pro-Pro 2 suit is connected to the Kuhnke port at the bottom of the pack.

My other theory is that the Kuhnke coupling was related to the thruster system of the Supertrooper suit. As seen in this photo, the port is related to a 'gas' system on the suit.

As shown in the Supertooper video at 3:04, the suit has a thruster system with gas venting from the thruster pack. I wonder if that port released a leftover gas from the pack, hence the 'gas out valve' label. Again, though, this is just pure speculation.

Regardless of whether they were present or not, I know ESB fetts in the Legion who achieved basic approval with them on the pack. I have also been told they are requiring the ports for the 'Infamous' level of approval.

I followed Irongladiator's port discussion closely:

Both the BNC Bulkhead and the coupling are still available for purchase. The BNC Bulkhead is inexpensive and readily available from L-Com. The Kuhnke coupling is only available from a site in Germany, and you can expect to pay a premium, especially if you live in the US. I detailed that experience here:

I am looking for the vintage XLR port. The one I have is perfectly acceptable for now. It's made by the same manufacturer as the found part, ITT Cannon. From my understanding, it is the same part; it is just the new version with very minor changes, mainly to the front branding.

After this post, I will be taking a break while I travel for Christmas. I can't wait to get the ball rolling again after the break!

Merry Christmas!

My other theory is that the Kuhnke coupling was related to the thruster system of the Supertrooper suit. As seen in this photo, the port is related to a 'gas' system on the suit.
Some good documention in this thread. There are some folks who have deep knowledge of the jetpack you're referencing and maybe they can chime in, but I'm pretty sure the one in the picture was the PP2 jetpack and the gas line went out to the flamethrower on the left gauntlet. Probably same for the supertrooper/PP1 jetpack, as those early models feature a working gas burning torch for the flame thrower. Was it on the ESB jp? No one knows. We may never know. But if that was an extra pack that was quickly painted green as a last second replacement for the multi-colored version, then its possible it was missing those sorts of details. But maybe it was fully built like the others regardless of the fact the working flamethrower idea was abandoned for the ESB suit. The pack build may have preceded that decision to replace the working flamethrower wiht a non-functional prop. Unless the ESB pack turns up there is no authority on this matter.

Very well said! It's a shame that these parts are lost for what seems like forever. But who knows, maybe someone has Boba's ESB jetpack in their attic because they had a relative who worked on the film. Boba's blaster turned up all these years later. Nothing is impossible!

Metal for Days!

First, my topper from terminal fettler arrived! I have the SX-70 viewfinder to go with that. That will be sent over to Major for painting!

Second, a bunch of metal parts arrived from MachineCraft for my jetpack, guanlets, shin tools, and armor!

Third, I thought I had ordered a Royal 242PD calculator for the key caps, which are the armor studs, but what came in the mail was a 244PD. So I ordered the 242PD today, which should be here in a few days. The keycaps should be the same size; they use different methods of attachment to the calculator. I will document all that once the 242PD arrives.

Is the only difference in the keys is the attachment method to the springs of the calculator? Interesting.
That's what I am assuming based on photos of the 242PD caps and rough measurements I took. But I did say "should", I will have confirmation once the 242PD arrives.

The keys on the 244PD are a lot like modern keys. They attach to the switch via a stem. Whereas the 242 has a stem built into the cap.

With either of these, you have to mod the bottom to make them work with Fett's armor. So if both were made at the same time by the same company, and the keys are the same size but have different attachment methods, we could be looking at another source for these armor studs.

But if they aren't the same size, I will let you know. Once I can do a side-by-side comparison, I will know for sure.

242PD v 244PD...

After I received the 244PD by mistake, I ordered a 242PD to extract the correct keys for my build. But I have made an interesting discovery.

26182.jpg

All you need to do is pull them up with a key-cap puller. I want to note that the green keys were brittle and the stems were damaged during extraction. Keep that in mind if you buy one of these. I didn't have this problem with the other keys.

26201.jpg

So I theorized that the 244PD and 242PD keys were the same size; they just had different attachment methods. And, I was wrong. About .03 millimeters wrong. Here are some side-by-sides. (The 242PD key looks bigger in the first photo because the stem elevates it.)
Left: 242PD
Right: 244PD
26189.jpg
26192.jpg
26194.jpg

I purchased a pair of calipers for this comparison. They are the same height, not including the stem on the 242PD key. In terms of width, the 244PD kets are .03 millimeters smaller. Other than that, I feel they are nearly identical.
Left: 242PD
Right: 244PD

So ultimately, I will be using the 242PD keys for my build. I don't know what I am going to do with the 244PD keys, but if anyone is interested, let me know.

SCUBA TIME!

I just received my jetpack harness from DrToothache the other day, and I am incredibly impressed! I am not just impressed with the product, but also with his communication and professionalism! Very easy to work with!

I love the product's accuracy, down to the weld marks! As a certified diver, this is also a neat piece of history, even though it's a replica.

I attached my vintage dive buckle, and I have to stay. It doesn't look too shabby!

26737.jpg

I just need to trim the straps and sew them onto the jetpack. I also saw Full Metal Fett is back, so I'm going to pick up hooks and a triglide from him.

Side update, I just sent my first payment over to Clothears for an ESB soft parts set. My wallet wants to be put out of its misery, but I know it will be absolutely worth it!

The Big One...

Today I received my helmet from Major! It's been a few years since I sent it off. Major told me that, going into it, I wouldn't receive it for a while. Which honestly worked out because I had just started college at the time, and frankly, I was in over my head. I didn't have the time or money to devote to fett. So it arrived at a perfect time!

The base is a Wasted Fett FUGLY. Added are metal ears and a Borden connector from MachineCraft. The last addition I made was an RF topper from terminal fettler.

My helmet also contains two found parts. The Casio MQ-1 calculator—its circuit board is used in the back. The RF topper contains a viewfinder from a Polaroid SX-70 camera!

I just have to install the electronics, and it will be complete!

Other updates: my armor is away being painted by BudaFett! So that's very exciting!
