tjr2d2's "Gotta Start Somewhere!" ESB Build

Let me just say at this point that if it was not for all the expertise and support here on TDH that I would never have been willing to attempt painting my own helmet. To all those who have inspired me; too numerous to name everyone, but just a few; superjedi, darth vorhees, welsh warrior, 22ssplt, terminal fettler. Thank you all for all your hard work and for sharing it with all of us! I just pray that when all is said and done that mine would be okay, if not just close to your works of art!

All That being said...Let it begin!

Wish me luck!

Greetings and Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all are doing well, and thanks for checking back in.

Sorry for taking so long to update the old thread here, i had a little bit of time to work on my bucket during the holidays, also had a bit of a hard time getting the silver color just right, but now I think I am ready to move on to the next layer of the back panels, which will hopefully be within the next few days.

Any who, Here are my progress pics and please (as always) feel free to drop me a comment, good/bad it really helps!

Silver color, (humbrol #11)

After letting the paint cure for a day or two, I then tried my hand at drawing on the silver damage areas with the stencils (found here on TDH) and transfer paper.

then slapped on the humbrol maskol (masking fluid)

here is a shot of what it looks like in natural light (photos taken on a wet/rainy day, sorry!)

i am hoping to get the next layer of paint on in the next few days and post progress pics soon thereafter.
Thats all for now. Thanks again for checking in.

Now that I'm home and can see the color of your helmet more clearly, I definitely think the Silver 11 looks like it needs the metalcote added to it.

Wait...weren't you Catbread not too long ago? ;)

All kidding aside, since I am still awaiting the metalcote to arrive I seriously need to know (so that I can move on!) will the silver I have down on it now NOT be approved? Is this based on opinion or what is 501st/BHG approvable?

Please do not get me wrong, I really appreciate your help, but I am simply chomping at the bit to press on here.

just in case, I did pick up some of the Testors Diamond Dust today. If all else fails and the metalcote does not show up soon, I may just roll with that if the present silver color is NOT approvable.

Wait...weren't you Catbread not too long ago? ;)

Who? Who's catbread? That's a really weird name... :wacko

Kidding, ANYWAYS, this is what my Humbrol 11 looked like on my first GMH paint up that I never finished a couple of years ago, from before Humbrol changed the formula... I don't think yours looks too far off actually! I'd wait for a second opinion in case I've shaken you a bit with my back and forth... (wouldn't hate you for it! lol)

LOL, I like the new name Cat...I mean Raizo! :)

It's all good Bro, I do appreciate every single comment, piece of advice, constructive criticism, etc. It's all about creating the best kit possible.

That being said, 22ssplt and I talked earlier this evening and he gave the color a thumbs up. So, unless anyone else seriously objects to the present color, I am going to press on like fake nails.

Well here goes nothing. Next layer of paint (humbrol #106) going down. Gonna see if I can put down at least 3-4 layers today, let it sit overnight and then start pulling off the maskol.

Gotta love my makeshift helmet stand consisting of an upside down, half empty container of spackle and a half empty (or half full) roll of paper towels. :)

Well here is how it looks now with about 4 layers on it. Gonna let it sit for tonight and pull off the maskol tomorrow, or maybe even tonight if I am able.

thanks again for checking in and as always feel free to chime in, comment, critique, etc.

Update, the metalcote finally showed up today just as soon as I finished putting the gray down! Figures ;)

This also showed up in the mail not too long ago. The Rangefinder Servo Kit from jc27. This should be very interesting to put together considering my lack of electrical skills. Stay tuned!

Did anyone seriously think that I was going to wait until tomorrow to do this?? ;)
I have to admit, that was pretty fun taking all the maskol off. Now to (really) let it sit overnight and I will lightly hit it with some 0000 steel wool.

While waiting for the bucket to dry overnight, I decided to turn my attention to the right ear cap. I managed to get on a good couple coats of diamond dust. once it dried i scratched on the mini kill stripes using stencils and a little strip of transfer paper and a toothpick.

here is how they came out after painstakingly hand painting them on.

once that was all done, I figured i would just throw on a base layer of humbrol 94 (I will airbrush the rest when it comes time to do the entire right ear)

That is all for tonight. Thanks again for checking in!
