The Mandalorian Boba helmet derived from Sideshow bust? If so, what changes - Discussion

I don't think they used the sideshow for the TMS2 fett , both dents don't match the BFHCD cast and the ear platform is different ?
The top 2 are the Cobb vanth and Boba Fresh dents, bottom 2 are sure by side sideshow and BFHCD.

BFHCD's is definitely an unaltered ROTJ Sideshow recast , you can clearly see the ROTJ killstripes details

Thank you very much for these comparisons. If there is anything else you need a photo of, please do let me know. The paint details are hard to catch in photos but I might be able to set up some harsher lighting to grab them.

I’ve not read through the entire thread, but the title did make me chuckle because here we all are comparing how wonky and inaccurate these busts are...and then they go and use one for one of our favorite shows....MAKING us accept said wonky helmet as now canon and something we want. Love it! Haha

It really is perplexing they went through the cost and effort of having Legacy handle it rather than just going back and casting one of the actual vintage helmets in the archives they presumably have full access to.

Thats not how things work.... the archives arent owned by Disney. They cant just go in and molest the props.

Lol! Key word was "presumably". I realize the archives aren't owned by Disney but no arrangements can be made to access the props at all? Seems odd eFX, Anovos and whatever other LFL/Disney licensees can access the props to scan/mold/whatever but a LFL production cannot?

The fett helmet was scanned, and molded years ago. They COULD have gotten said scan from Anovos even. They didn’t. Because to everyone else (not us) it looks like boba fett.

They could literally have bought a bunch of the fan made helmets like from Bobamaker or ToEleven and the result would have been better.
The vendors would probably have gifted them the helmets if that means they are made canon.... Oh well....

Or with the current state of the Fett hobby,... They could have gotten a buch of G2 ESB helmets.... Or if the wanted to represent RotJ Boba... a buch of MR recasts and the result would have been stellar.

What bugs me is the lack of effort and research.

I wonder whether they could have used a Jango helmet as the base ? Is the right upper ear cap longer on the JF helmet?

I can sort of understand why they didn't just reproduce directly from an existing Helmet as Tem is shorter than Jeremy Bulloch was, and as such a full scale Boba Helmet might have looked off on him. Sort of the same reason that the Jango helmet itself is smaller than a Boba Helmet. They could have scaled down one of their scans of a Boba helmet and printed it at a more proportional size to Tem, but, at that point it probably was faster to just mold the Life Size Bust, which was undersized from the Full Scale, than bother with scaling, printing, cleaning, and then casting a smaller size helmet based on a scan of the original.

At the end of the day, even if the people working on the show are Fans, it's a job first to produce these props and costumes, and it benefits them to do it as fast and efficient as possible.

the screen used Jango isnt much smaller then a Boba helmet though. Like the GMH the recasted recasted recasts are smaller due to shrinkage. Its bigger then the Bust helmet anyhow...

As I was prepping the helmet for finishing, the details became a good bit easier to see. Here are a few more photos of this cast for anyone interested.

I'm interested and may pick one up just to have and practice my painting, but how does it compare size wise to BS helmet? I look like a bobble head in the black series. CRLs will be out in a couple weeks for repainted Fett and I will be going for 501st approval, so I'm kind of holding off buying too much now.

There's always The Book of Boba Fett...we'll see!

As a buyer what's your opinion on this helmet ? You have paid good money for something that has claimed lineage when It's quite clearly a rotj sideshow helmet recast and a poor one at that .

I knew going into the purchase that it very very likely was the Sideshow helmet, but it was a decent price even for that. If the dude dropped the ******** claim and sold it as the Sideshow recast it is, I wouldn’t have a single problem with it. As it stands now, with his claims, I can’t in good conscience recommend it. Keep in mind the turn signals were enlarged and that “19” added as “proof of it being from TMS2”, those were intentional changes meant to deceive buyers.

If we’re talking cast quality, it is pretty low unfortunately. He rotocast it with onyx and it is a very uneven thickness. I had to reinforce it with epoxy putty in several thin spots. The surface of the cast is covered in microbubbles which will be an issue for the painting, and the ear, stalk, and range finder casts are very subpar. It is not a good kit for someone unfamiliar with finishing. I forgot to mention as well, when casting my copy he didn’t seat the silicone in the jacket properly, there are two shallow indents from where I presume the keys are in the mold. So that sucks.
