Started this paint up a while ago, but only picked up momentum recently. The ToEleven kit is fantastic. Arrived pristine with almost no clean up/filling required. Added visor clips from Sidewinder, these are very nice. Stencils and dry transfers were from Funkyred, both very easy to use.

Was intending to go full layered mode as I did on my ROTJ FPH2. I ended up just putting the main colours down with the airbrush and painted the rest with a traditional brush.

Still have a little left to do on it. I’m liking it so far. I’ll add more pics as I wrap it up.

It’s looking great! Can you go into any detail about how you layered/mixed your colours? Specifically the green on the dome and cheeks, and the right earpiece.

Not much mixing involved.

Dome and lower cheeks Light Green and Grime 50:50ish, tape pull was same but with more Grime. SP Dark Lark for main grey and greenish grey parts SP Lettering Grey

Visor/Mandible/Keyslots D&H Caboose, SP Dark Lark, Maroon mixed 50:50 Engine Black. Greenish grey parts done with SP Lettering Grey.

Upper Cheeks were painted D&H Caboose first then Grimy Black. Grey is SP Dark Lark.

Right Ear Earth Lt, SP Dark Lark, Engine Black and Tamiya White Primer.

Left Ear Coach Green first, then Light Green. Lighter grey is ANH DS Surface Grey and Red is Caboose. Spatter is Rust. White for decal/graphic is Tamiya primer.

Killstripes SP Armour Yellow with gradient to mixture of SP Armour Yellow and Rust.

Rear panels main green is Engine Black and Dark Green 50:50. Then Dark Grime, SP Dark Lark and SP Lettering Grey for greenish grey parts.

*facepalm* of course you put that in the initial post and I read right past it. Very interesting idea on traditional brushing. Does it take you longer than masking and airbrushing everything? It looks amazing!

I’ve only done the ROTJ Hero using the layers with liquid mask. It didn’t take as long, but there’s less colours on ROTJ.

I’m gonna do another ESB in the near future with the layering/liquid mask method. I’m wanting to do Pre-Pro 2 next. On leave from 3rd October, so I’ll get cracking then.

When I’m done with this ESB, hopefully soon, it’ll be up for sale in The Cargo Hold.

Very nice! Looking forward to seeing the progress on that near future ESB (y)

Fantastic work. Nice to see how those original colors get to their finished state on a helmet.

To give you some idea I believe it is a wash on how long it takes for both methods depending on how critical you are. I have spent 3 hours each evening laying out the liquid mask for each mandible color just to take 15 minutes with the airbrush for the layering method. No instant gratification like going topical and has more anxiety that you are laying the mask out correctly before spraying.

Makes sense. I'm not even sure on how to do stencils and masking once I start. I have to start doing some research and see what I'm most comfortable with

Have a look on YouTube for Blaidon Props. Lewis White of Blaidon Props has a step by step for the ESB Fett helmets all done using layers and liquid mask. He’s since worked on the Disney era movies as a costume / prop maker.

The videos are thorough, well worth a look.

Thanks for the recommend! I'll have to check him out

It looks incredible. Great time to be a Fett helmet painter. From the talent, information, materials and helmets available to the community it makes it hard not to have a good to stellar outcome depending on the individuals talent level. Makes me glad I waited to finish my helmet last on my display. Keep up the inspirational work and I look forward to the all layered version.

All done. DSLR makes it look grey in natural light. The iPhone makes it look very green. In reality it’s smack bang in the middle.

This will be up for sale in The Cargo Hold.
