Let's talk about flare. This is it.

I'm not saying there aren't differences but they are the same base helmet. There is a visor placement issue on the PP3 as there is in all of the helmets but in this shot the PP3 is tilted slightly to the right which accounts for some of your argument. It's an illusion based on a bit of mild difference. Forcing flare into a helmet is a mistake. It's all about the angles; ask Tom from Miller's Crossing.

I agree they are def the same base helmet, all pulled from the same mold im sure. What i am seeing is the entire cheek panel slightly....ever so slightly.... twisted. Which i think did in fact force some flare to the helmet. But that said, i think its less than i originally perceived.

I tend to agree with its all in the angles, but no matter how i hold the MR it never looks like what i see in ESB unless i pull the sides out a bit. So i dunno . We could probably go on about this until we are old n gray..but i dont think we'll ever truly know why we see that flare in ESB.

The measurement of the PP2 according to Keegans post above, is just under 9.5" wide. Mine is 10" so when i do V2 i will take it down a notch and see what i get. Or i may just do a new scratch build. Not sure yet. But all of that said, this will just end up my interpretation of the ESB helmet and whether or not it is truly "right" would likely be irrelevant because there is no way id be able to get all aspects of the helmet dead on, or even that close. Without linage its just a fan sculpt, and for my helmets, im fine with that. Im not going to tout it as the best helmet ever lol.

I couldn't see starting over with a scratch build, unless you're just itching to do it. Seems that the MR would be a great starting point to tweek here and there. Including the dent.
There are plenty of aspects of the MR lid that looks to be in good shape.

Lou, given the discourse we've had I think you could bring us a MR derivative with alterations in esb and rotj that might answer a lot of questions. Just don't overcook that flare. Not enough on the MR might be right but those other Christmas diet issues I've mentioned are right for me.

The reason i was thinking about another scratch build is the size. The MR is a touch big i think. Not really sure how to scale it down without messing up proportions.

I could just leave the size the same and start with a fresh MR cast and just approach it differently and see what i come up with. Although i think the Animefan helmet is likely the nicest we are going to get from a MR based kit.

I havent done a scratch build in a while... i think id be better at it this time lol But i dunno we'll see which direction i go lol

Haha you were posting as i was lol.

I appreciate your support, and value your opinion Andy. Im def gonna give it a shot. Going to reduce the flare on the v2 whether it be another MR derived helmet or a scratch build. ..or maybe a combination...hmmm

I hate to even ask but what helmet best represents the best flare for a ROTJ version? I don't want to cause an uproar but was just curious .....seems that a lot of the ROTJ molds lack the flare...

No uproar. I'm still firmly in the MR camp. There are other things out there I'd prefer and that are better but getting them is another story. For availability the MR still has everything in spades. It really hasn't been bettered in the believable/available/affordable stakes. Still king nearly ten years on.

Intwenothor is the RS Propmaster mold close to that ? Or the Fettpride II ROTJ ?

I believe the RS is derived from a MR helmet.

Thank u Sean ....appreciate your help here's my FettPride II before I shipped it to Paul last week...

Agree entirely. Careful work on that dent would be a massive step for me. I felt the dent on the fph2 was a nice improvement; not quite there but better. That MR dent is a crater.

Since we're talking about flare...and whether it's there...here's a pic I'd like to share...

I took some time today and increased the flare on my Animefan budget helmet by 1/2". Heated in the oven on 375 degrees for 2 minutes. Then I put a rod in the base to hold it at the desired width and ran it under some cold water to cool it back down. Once cooled down I removed the rod and VOILA...FLARE! Here's a pic of it next to the FPH2 that I'm currently painting for starchild99.

thats pretty much what i did for my casts. I took one of my base MR casts and put a pvc pipe in it after some heating. then i made a new mold while the pipe was still in it. Pretty much did exactly what you did there. :)
