*SPOILERS* The Book of Boba Fett Discussion

My brother in law who has never seen star wars before, has disney plus. He texted me this morning that he decided to watch TBoBF, because “you dress up like the guy.”

He texted me:
“I’m 2 episodes in now. Seriously, why do you dress up like this guy? He’s weak AF?”

*sighs*

My brother in law is a huge godfather, sopranos, all gangster movies fan.

Well that sucked, all I could tell him was “well… he was really awesome in the books that don’t exist anymore.”

so you did consume some of the EU Books? Have you ever read the Legacy of the force novels? Or the Republic Commando Series? Or the Original 90s Boba Fett Trilogy?
If you’re ever in los angeles, there’s actually astar wars themed bar, called ‘the scum and villainy cantina”. They even encourage people to go in costume. I I was going to go there for my bday in 2020… but, bleepin’ covid shut everything down. Still, it’s a really cool looking place if you want to look it up online
Is it an official Disney run gig? Because I wouldnt like that. Its strange really... Ive always wanted such a "in universe" experience... Now that they have made something like that its all Sequels based and I have ZERO interest in it... Its sad really :(

The only EU content I've taken in regarding Fett is Twin Engines and a couple of the games. What's interesting to me about all this is that the overall idea of who Fett is/was is pretty pervasive throughout the fandom. Either through the OT, books, comics, and fan art.

Everyone I've chatted with, who I'd describe as much more casual about their interest in Fett, all seem to have very similar ideas about what we expected him to be like vs how he is in the show. Simply put, everyone expected a more calculating and capable hunter checking names off a list rather than a bumbling hero looking for greener pastures.

So even without having consumed anything but the OT, the audience seems to have had very basic expectations in common, and it would appear to me that the showrunners consciously said "no" to that. That's not necessarily a horrible thing, but you've got to deliver something pretty strong if you're going to do that.

Even as someone who isn't as unhappy with this show as others, there is a definite disconnect between Boba in this and Boba on Mandalorian. You don't have to be familiar with EU at all or even go back more than a year ago to be puzzled about this characterization of Boba Fett. And I imagine a lot of casual viewers were first introduced to him on that show. I worked with a dozen people last year that wouldn't miss an episode of the Mandalorian each week but half hadn't seen the movies in many years and the others hadn't seen them at all. Mandalorian seemed like a massive gateway for a lot of new star wars fans so that's Boba in their heads.

The latest kicker for me was seeing a Boba (BoBF version) bust model being advertised as ‘The Gentle Giant.’

What. The. Hell.

OT Boba is neither gentle nor a giant. That was the point. He was a relatively skinny 5ft 5 near-mute who moved slowly. That was the attraction. Who is this guy!? He didn’t look imposing aside from the armour and yet the respect he commanded was evident.

None of that is present in BoBF. He still isn’t gentle but in a very different way - now he either just doesn’t get physical when he absolutely should or he goes into full brute mode and smashes everything up like a ham fisted oaf.

Oh and he’s still not a giant, he’s a tubby pensioner. But if he is now perceived as a ‘gentle giant’ then the character is f**ked to be honest.

Gentle Giant is the company that produced that. They do a lot of similar busts and collectibles.

Eh, if you don't know the company then you don't know. I have been kinda lusting after those busts lately tho so I knew exactly what you were referring to.

No. Scum and Villainy is a "geek bar." Created by fans of all scifi for fans of scifi.

scumandvillainycantina.com

I have nothing to do with them, just sharing the link. Yelp reviews aren't bad at 4.5? Rated well for atmosphere, but the food doesn't get high praise.

Oga's Cantina at Disney however has pretty much positive reviews from everyone I've seen. High price drinks are the exception to the praise, but theming is great from all reports and the place is clean and well maintained.

I read them soooooo many years ago, I honestly only remember bits and pieces of different novel series, like the zahn ones, truce at bakarra.. it’s been so many years it’s all a jumble.

The scum and villainy cantina was originally a temporary pop-up bar that’d show up around the city. It got so popular that they eventually bought a space in hollywood. The theme of the place is kind of set up like the mos eisley cantina, but they welcome folks in any costumes. Ive seen pics on their Facebook page of full on 501st groups descending on the place, to guys dressed up like the crew of firefly, star trek, or just regular clothes

I am definitely checking them out. I see no weapons nor backpacks but hoping a jetpack is alright...

Who would've guessed the best episode was the one Boba isn't even in
I think we found the problem with the show. It's the man who's name is in the title
I honestly thought, with 3 episodes left, this week’s episode was going to have boba start calling in muscle (mando, dengar, bossk…) and start making power grabs against the pykes to set up his takeover of the city, which would take the final 3 episodes.

Now they have to do it, believably, in only 2 episodes. Pretty surprised the entire 5th episode was essentially season 3, episode 1 of the Mandalorian.
