Slave1Pirate's Aluminum ROTJ Boba Fett Build PIC HEAVY

FYI AlphaCloneFett mean no disrespect and you didn't upset me lol. I am just switching gears and I am going to just do Fett as close to accurate as possible and not get too deep on it. The titles changed and I'm trudging forward :)
Not a problem, it's a deep rabbit hole lol but yeah it's quite the mess, took me months to figure it all out....I've only seen a couple cosplays that are correct "hero", most others are variations.

It’s best to use screen captures as much as you can. The traveling display costumes are somewhat of a mixture of parts with some acquired damage from being moved around so much. The CRLs are not always 100% correct either.

Ugh....i hate the 10k pictures that are spread out over one gallery labeled ROTJ. Like why could we divide them into Hero, SE and so on. Too many damn versions haha. I give up.
The Hero RotJ is the hardest to do because the production era references aren't that good. I agree the media library could be organized better to differentiate the exhibits. The exhibits with the hero armor show us the armor is still pretty close to what it was during production. I know for sure the right hero gauntlet has never been on display. And the left one, when it was on display, was in a bad state.

Tonight I began weathering the flight suit. My double action air brush took a crap on me due to stripped threads so I resorted to my single action airbrush midway through and feel like I was getting better results anyway.

I only weathered the left side because I wanted a reference point. Weather vs non-weather. I started with a 1:1 mix of grey and sandstone to lay in the desert sands. Afterwards I went straight nutmeg brown. Then I laid on the black mist for the heavy soot and dirt. I feel like I need more of the heavy soot though.

I took photos to close the night and as I write this post I SEE the picture difference. My jumpsuit is a light blue grey! How does it look tanish grey?! Lighting and camera. Just like in the films. Crazy lol.

So what do yall think? Input?

I weathered the hip pouches tonight! I like the way they turned out. Good n dirty. Need to get the flight suit some more too.

I also taped up the armor plates on the flak vest so I could weather in those gaps between and around the plates.

Then I laid in the brownish sand tones in all the cracks.

A very exciting evening tonight. Tonight is the moment where it all began to sink in. Tonight is the moment that I truly realized the gravity of this project. The weight of having a Boba Fett costume. You would think I realized by now after the long hours of design and physical labor of building each armor piece.

But tonight it all clicked: the armor lights by Fettronics using RafalFett"s ROTJ sequence.

I began by marking out the slots where they would go.
20240728_165915.jpg20240728_171240.jpg
Using a small drill bit, I drilled out the 4 corners of each slot and then followed up with a dremel cut off wheel.
20240728_172140.jpg20240728_173808.jpg
Then a little bit of dremel stone clean up and so slow and methodical file work to get it just right.

A text fit of the first slot.

Omg it's so awesome.

Wow I gotta agree with you that looks awesome! And is the plate as heavy as it sounds, because it sounded that way. But it def looks the part…solid work.

It's not terribly heavy. I made it out of sheet aluminum about .0625 of an inch thick and folded the edges to make it LOOK heavy without it BEING heavy.

But it's super awesome that all armor pieces are aluminum! I mean.....beskar.......

Yep, that's when it kinda hit me too in my journey of constructing this suit. Adding in the fancy electronic features. Of the things I get the most compliments of are:
1) Voice - (By MiCOM)
2) Smoke Kit for my Jet Pack (By SpoonMakes)
3) Servo Range Finder (By NeoFett)
4) Chest Display (By Fettronics)

Also, during a Halloween event I got a compliment from a kid who really liked my costume, but went on to say "You also have the Gloves!!!"
:D
So yeah my Gloves (By Mike M. )

Cheers,
-Iron

BTW: I know it is known by some that MiCom went offline last year - now, as of June 2024, they are making their come back! In fact, I also obtained a second voice profile for my ROTJ Scout Trooper costume from them back in February of this year. So it is nice to know they still supported their existing customers even though they had to take a leave of absence from their regular MiCom Sales.

I did it today! Check it out.
I ordered some aluminum standoffs and screws to fit the Fettronics' circuit boards and installed them.

I set them down on the aluminum chest piece and started filing the posts until I had the right angle and epoxied them in. Check out the video!

Here are some photos.

Very similar method I use when making paint stencils. I use the same die cutter I use to make decals and am using vinyl stencil material instead of masking tape, but the process is pretty much the same. I used this method exclusively when I did my last armor paint up and have used it some when painting my last helmet (works well for the killstripes.) and jetpack. The only trick is to get the scaling correct for your particular armor/helmet.

I am by no means a fan of chat gpt but i just dropped in and picked its brain for hours. This thing had the nerve to tell me what it thought of Boba Fett's helmet colors. I was surprised by its response.

Got it. Since many of these Humbrol paint colors are no longer available, you might want to look for equivalent colors from other paint brands like Tamiya, Testors, or Vallejo. Here are some common equivalents:

  1. Grey No 147: Light Grey
    • Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey
    • Vallejo 70.989 Sky Grey
  2. Silver No 11: Silver
    • Tamiya X-11 Chrome Silver
    • Vallejo 70.997 Silver
  3. Gunmetal No 53: Gunmetal
    • Tamiya XF-56 Metallic Grey
    • Vallejo 70.863 Gunmetal Grey
  4. Grey No 67: Dark Grey
    • Tamiya XF-24 Dark Grey
    • Vallejo 70.994 Dark Grey
  5. Grey No 79: Blue Grey
    • Tamiya XF-18 Medium Blue
    • Vallejo 70.907 Pale Grey Blue
  6. Black No 33: Flat Black
    • Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black
    • Vallejo 70.950 Black
  7. Grey No 31: Slate Grey
    • Tamiya XF-20 Medium Grey
    • Vallejo 70.992 Neutral Grey
  8. Green No 78: Cockpit Green
    • Tamiya XF-71 Cockpit Green
    • Vallejo 71.010 Interior Green
  9. Green No 131: Mid Green
    • Tamiya XF-26 Deep Green
    • Vallejo 70.891 Intermediate Green
  10. Green No 76: Uniform Green
    • Tamiya XF-13 JA Green
    • Vallejo 70.893 US Dark Green
  11. Green No 101: Light Green
    • Tamiya XF-5 Flat Green
    • Vallejo 70.968 Flat Green
  12. Orange No 82: Orange
    • Tamiya XF-6 Copper
    • Vallejo 70.911 Light Orange
  13. Yellow No 154: Yellow
    • Tamiya XF-3 Flat Yellow
    • Vallejo 70.953 Flat Yellow
  14. Red No 60: Red
    • Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red
    • Vallejo 70.957 Flat Red
  15. Red No 73 + Red No 100: Red
    • Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red (mix)
    • Vallejo 70.957 Flat Red (mix)
  16. Gold No 16: Gold
    • Tamiya X-12 Gold Leaf
    • Vallejo 70.996 Gold
  17. Chocolate No 98: Brown
    • Tamiya XF-10 Flat Brown
    • Vallejo 70.872 Chocolate Brown
  18. White No 34: White
    • Tamiya XF-2 Flat White
    • Vallejo 70.951 White
  19. Olive No 66: Olive Green
    • Tamiya XF-62 Olive Drab
    • Vallejo 70.889 Olive Drab
You can mix and match these equivalents to get as close as possible to the original Humbrol colors. It might take some experimenting to get the exact shades right. Let me know if you need more help!

Well hell. I have seen a few discrepancies but a few good matches too that i didnt see before....

So i threw away my left aluminum gauntlet I welded up. It was too long and some of the angles didnt line up. So I am starting over from scratch instead of using WOF's templates. I had purchased some MonCal plastic gauntlets from NoJohns for reference, thanks bud! This has given me a way to measure all the dimensions to start creating this for sheet metal. Here is where i am at, again, so far.

Well some paints arrived and I played around with them and masking fluid. I tested this on one of my extra aluminum ammo pouches.

That turned out pretty good, although you may get mixed results putting multiple layers of paint over multiple layers of the masking fluid.

Wow did I have fun today! So, I used my laser to cut out the silver masks on the abdomen panel. A couple of the masks are shown below.

After masking the areas, I put the Vallejo masking fluid down and peeled up the masking tape. It didn't bleed and did very well. Here is the panel masked up and ready for yellow.
