ROTJ Build: Buying and Building a Bounty Hunter in 5 months

Zombienoms

New Hunter
Background: I've always loved Boba Fett and in the past few years I've gotten into cosplay. My experience is cardstock and bondo builds of War Machine armors, and Foam build Deathstroke, now I'm looking for a new challenge/suit. I decided right out of the gate that I wanted a display piece, something hearty that would last multiple cons with little wear and tear and that I could display when not in use. This lead me to the idea that I need a resin build, something which I personally have no experience or skill set for. So I researched and used this site to source raw parts which I could finish in time for NYCC. Finding multiple talented builders I balanced my budget which came from summer work with my timeline and felt that getting the raw parts and finishing them myself would save cost and also let me have a hand in the build past being a financier.

Price: As I said I sourced everything for this build (a new sensation) and bought raw casts which I finished and painted myself assembling them to suit my needs. I've included the price I paid for individual parts as well as the talented builders (most from right here) who should get the credit for craftsmanship.

Another VERY good alternative for the helmet is Animefans helmets. A beautiful resin cast alone will only cost you $155 USD.

I recommend looking him up in The Dented Helmet Cargo Hold.

It is a shame you bought that helmet. That seller is a known recaster who doesn't even bother to take the FP off the helmet before he copied someone else's work. He goes by several names including class of 1984 and Slartblartifast (or something like that) among others.

The rest of your list looks pretty good.

Yeh i noticed that when he said the name it sounded familiar. I recommended Animefan though. In my opinion one of the best out there.

I was not aware of the recasting, I believe I looked at anime fan in my initial considerations but he was backed up on orders and wouldn't have made my deadline. Can't speak to the gun really, I think it's a painted rubies as it has the light and sound but it suited my needs.

I'm assessing upgrades and so far I'm going to get metal cast darts for the gauntlet since my cast ones got caught and snapped.

Also need to consider my gauntlet hose options, I got a braid hose that matches reference pics but despite me taking a heat gun to it to try and ease the stiffness it still had too much tension and snapped one of the connectors off my gauntlet.

The gun is a painted hasbro gun you can buy for 30 bucks. Its a cool gun (I have one myself) but its not accurately sized. It's about 2/3 the size of the real version.

There are other accuracy issues with the costume...but nothing someone other then a Fett purist would notice.

Nice set up so far. You planning on hitting the boots, gloves, belts, flightsuit with weathering?
A really top notch helmet can really bring it all together too :D

Out of curiosity what inaccuracies? I thought I did decently but would appreciate any input
Post on thebhg.net if you want 501st accuracy with more detailed pictures. Take all pictures in direct sunlight. A lot would need to be repainted from what I can see so far for 501st accuracy.

After taking a second glance at it there are issues paint jobs on all your armor pieces Don't be upset by this, Boba Fett...and IMO ROTJ Boba Fett. is one of the HARDEST costumes to get approved and accurate in the 501st legion. In the 501st we strive for movie accuracy...but also settle on common ground stuff as in RoTJ so many different parts were worn at various portions of the movie. It's not a slight against you, but more so a movie accuracy thing that was settled on.

For instance this is what the helmet would look like.Notice the battle damage differences between your helmet and that one. I'm not even going into paint color schemes. You did a really nice artistic impression, but you did not accurately duplicate the battle damage of the real helmet worn in the movie and got some of the colors incorrect.

This is just to start.Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, just being honest. If you really want it I believe you have the talent to get you there in the end.

In the 501st we strive for movie accuracy...

LOL

crumdum, christ man, OP never once said ANYTHING about the 501st.

"I decided right out of the gate that I wanted a display piece, something hearty that would last multiple cons with little wear and tear and that I could display when not in use"
Zombienoms, keep up the good work bro, this is TDH, not the 501st. not everything has to be up to those standards for you to enjoy your build.

I said post on thebhg.net if he wanted 501st accuracy...then he requested some info. The helmet I linked is fairly screen accurate hence the linked images. There are differences in battle damage and weathering. Not everyone strives for Merc or 501st accuracy on builds which is fine and doesn't detract from the work the builder has done.

I appreciate both perspectives no worries. I figured I wasn't up to 501st rigor as I used the standards as a guideline not a bible.

Painting wise I'm not surprised it's not a total match as I used a reference guide of humbrol paints for damage but the base coats are actually all rattle can because I couldn't get a airbrush compressor in time so I hand brushed the damage. I looked at a bunch of reference photos and saw multiple examples so I eventually wasn't sure which to believe.

I do have weathering on the boots flight suit and gloves albeit a bit lighter but it didn't really show in pictures.

All in all I was pretty happy with my first outing and look forward to using the suit more and tweaking bits over time

Its all good buddy, you really did a great job. 99.99999% of the earths population wouldn't know whats different between yours and the movie. Getting that last .00001% is a pita...it just all depends on how accurate you want to be. It's your costume wear it how you want to wear it.
