How many hours to paint ESB helmet?

Just about to start on painting my helmet in ESB style, just wondering how many hours I should expect putting into the helmet, I'm going to try layering the paint on the helmet.

Ooh, thats a toughie. It of course is dependent on several factors, including - how accurate you want to be, colour testing and how much time you have available. If time permits you to do some work on it every day, then you can likey get it done in a few weeks. I don't quite have that luxury with a fairly busy work schedule and family, so because im essentially a pedantic old man, I take as long as I need to get my details just how I want them. So its no rarity that a helmet paint up can take 4-5 months for me. I'm pretty sure Garrett mentiones being around the 4 month mark at one point in his 'One last wafer thin..' thread, so it sounds about right. One thing that will help with ESB, is there are already many great tutorials, paint lists and stencills avail, so that will definately help cut down a bit of prep time for you. Good luck my friend! :)

Myself, I plan on painting it over my summer holidays (July & August). However, I'm already collecting all the Humbrol enamel paints I'll need, along with tracing paper, masking fluids, colour shapers, etc. I'll be testing out my masking fluid choices over the next couple weeks as i paint up my first gauntlet.

I painted for 4 months straight when I had time and when the weather wasn't bad outside. I completed the back panels(repainted them cause I wasn't happy) and ears(which I need to fix the right cap) But this includes trimming and cleaning and getting it setup for a moving RF. I'm also taking my time with mine as this is my first time painting as well. There are a lot of resources to pull from on this site especially Rafalfett's templates. Good luck (y)

On the way to the hobby store today with a list of enamels to buy, hopefully after prep work I will start the painting next week, I'm going to take my time with this and try to get it as accurate as possible.

Two weeks. For this helmet;

I was using the Welshwarior's youtube tutorials on the ESB paintjob, and had a vaccuum box for the airbrush, so I could paint at home. I used Humbrol paints which needed some 10-12 hours between layers to dry, and had a deadline for my Fett to be complete.

Two weeks, from start to finish. After work, I buffed the previous work with steel wool, and masked the next layer, then, some jogging outside to let the masking fluid dry, and paint. Then, few hours of sleep and repeat. Then to work, and another coat after work.

I did two - three layers per day, and was able to complete the bucket in time. No social life during those two weeks. Nada...

If I were to paint another bucket, I would take a month to do it, so I could have SOME free time....

Just got back from the hobby store, I was able to locate most of the paints but I am having trouble finding a colour for the upper cheeks. Nobody carries PRR Brunswick green or Humbrol 33, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Try a flat black rattle can spraypaint (any brand will do) and then lightly overspray it with Rustoleum Spruce Green. That's what I do. Works like a gem.

Humbrol 33 is just matte black, so matte black in most brands should be fine. I believe the upper cheeks to be black on ESB, and not a dark shade of green, like the brunswick. Once weathered and splatterred, it definately takes the sharpness off the black - but have a look at the hi-res images from the AOSW galleery, and I just cant see any green value in them.. :)

I can't see the green value in the upper cheeks, I was just going by the stencil which say's PPR Brunswick. I'll keep on looking but if you guys are suggesting matt black for the upper cheeks, sounds good to me it's easier to find lol. Thanks for all the help
