I spent the weekend painting the left ear.
I decided to do a layered approach on this, as opposed to the topical that I've done on most of the helmet.
I airbrushed the ear Vallejo Model Air Aluminum first, then I layered with 8:1 Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet and Archive-X D&H Caboose Red before tracing the damage with graphite paper and masking with Humbrol Maskol. I then layered with Citadel Astronomican Grey (the base blueish grey I have used elsewhere on the helmet), traced the damage and masked off.
I had previously asked Jon Bird who painted the helmets for RS Propmasters what he used for the green on this ear, and he said he had used Light Green mixed with Dark Lark Grey (as well as the rust spatters that shifts the hue). Which might have been what I had used myself had I not had a nice chat with
Deancfh yesterday where he shared some nice reference photos and his thoughts on what green was the closest match.
I used Dean's reference to mix up a custom colour that I thought would get me close, and ended up with a 4:3:2:1 mix of Archive-X Light Green, Dark Green, Dark Lark Grey and Engine Black.
As you can see the base green was quite dark (the photos above aren't adjusted for white balance), but the Rust really shifts the hue.
The exposed aluminum on the edges was achieved by lightly sanding away the paint with 2500 grit to bring out the first layer of aluminum I painted on. I also had to add the pencil circle using a compass.
The following pictures should be fairly close to how it looks in reality:
I'm really happy with how it turned out, and it's only missing the "E" dry transfers on the white arch, which are on their way in the mail from superjedi.
