3D Print ESB helmet WIP

What do you mean cartoony? I think the red may be a little bright but topical weathering should knock it back.
The 'cartoony' comment was only relating to the right ear, I just mean that the damage shapes look a little too rounded and the contrast in colours is quite stark. I'm happy with the key slot area though, I agree, it is a bit bright currently but as you say - weathering should knock it back. The same goes for the right ear I suppose - weathering should dull everything down.

Marked out the light grey damage on the upper cheeks and front mandible areas before laying down the silver layer.

I think this was the worst time I’ve had with the templates so far. The dimensions of this helmet around the mandibles are just nowhere near. I did the best I could though and used references from the celebration album to match up the areas as best I could.

I also filled in and re-cut the physical damage as it wasn’t where it was supposed to be. You can faintly see the old cut just below the new one:

Ordinarily, I would t have stopped with repairing the old cut until you would never know it was there but I’m not going to be too precious with this build.

Some silver damage areas marked out, ready for masking fluid. I had to stop because my printer has run out of ink and I still need to print, trace, and transfer damage areas for the right mandible.

I used green 78 as in TF’s paint thread. Looks a little too bold at the moment, but as I’m finding with a lot of this paint job so far - weathering will (I hope!) be a big part of getting the colours correct. I’m happy with how these came out though, I definitely feel like I have the hang of the airbrush now so this build has done it’s job as a way for me to get used to airbrushing.

Great job on the stenciling! I almost threw my practice helmet out my window when I was working on the mandibles!

Thank you! I’m back on the mandibles now, marking out the grey damage areas. I’ve had to resort to sizing each section independently as I’ve found it impossible to get the whole mandible section sized to fit. It’s probably for the best to be honest as I expect it’ll result in a much more accurate finish but tis certainly a pain in the posterior!

Purple layer is on. Disclaimer: This is no where near accurate and I know that. For some reason, the left (on the wearer’s side) was easier to match up with the templates than the right. I guess because it’s less complicated. I’m happy with the quality though, even if the accuracy isn’t quite there. I do love how nice the purple looks once it’s been buffed with wire wool.

Silver damage marked out on the dome. This took forever and was another case of matching up as best I could. With the dome, there are several ‘sign posts’ to aid with alignment…

…none of these match my helmet. The markers for the keyhole section at the back are wider on mine, the left ear is wider and the wrong distance from the dent, the indicator arrows at the front are the wrong size and too far apart and the curve of the helmet is completely different so yes, this was a challenge!

All these struggles will just help when you get your new helmet! Can't wait to see the green on the dome!
