3D Print ESB helmet WIP

Looking nice and clean!
Thank you! Glad I put as much time and effort into the sanding and filling as I did.

I went for the 3rd coat in the end, think I was right to. Also added the Borden connector as I realised I’d forgotten it! Again, this is before I’ve buffed with wire wool. It’s amazing how much of a difference that makes in blending the colour. How do you deal with the dust left behind? I’ve just been using the air through the airbrush to blow it away

I have the left ear painted red, ready for drawing the red damage. I just need to sort those templates out and I don’t have access to a colour printer. Tried using black and white printouts but it was way too hard so I need to figure something out.

Ok, it's official - I'm stupid.

Realised I don't need the colour print outs because I can just use the colour separated templates and in fact it's probably easier to do that. Maybe not at first as I have to go through for each part and size each layer but I'd rather put the time and hard work in at that stage to make the actual process of drawing out the layers easier.

In other news, the kit I have didn’t come with an MQ-1 board or have anything resembling one behind the key slots so I ordered a cast one from Etsy. I assume the guy I ordered it from is on here somewhere, the shop is CStallard Designs. Lovely piece:

Do you know which colours are used on the upper cheeks? The colour plan I have only mentions black 33 but on Rafals templates, theres reefer grey, bright grey, and silver. I'm using all Humbrol colours so do you know what the Humbrol equivalents are?

Thanks

How do you guys deal with pencil marks? I’ve done the red layer on the left ear, and just finished drawing out the next layer. I had a few pencil outlines visible following the red layer.

For the second one, I tried to make my outlines just a fraction bigger than the area I was tracing and then made sure my masking fluid fell just short of those lines, hoping the paint on the next layer will cover them up.

The left ear is now masked off with tape and fluid for painting the white arch:

And the grey damage is drawn on the rear RH panel.

Tomorrow I’ll spray the panel silver and get the white arch on the ear done.

Got the white arch down on the left ear. Pleased with it:

Also got the silver layer down on the rear RH panel. Not completely happy with it to be honest, I think I could’ve got a much more even coat but I didn’t want to over do it. Seems like the metallic paints need a touch more thinner?

Next up is to mark out the silver damage area once the paint has dried.

First coat of grey #106 on the back RH panel. Much happier with how this laid down.

I ordered some disposable syringes and they’re much easier to use for mixing and measuring paint than the pipettes I was using before.

Great updates! Love that left ear!
Thank you!

I actually re-drew and masked the final layer before putting down the green as I wasn’t happy with it.

Green is drying now, really happy with it:

I’d Seen some people struggle to get the colour right but for me, I found as long as you’re precise with your measurements and mix the paint really thoroughly, it’s pretty spot on. At least to my eyes anyway!

Can anyone point me in the direction for the best reference images too please? I've tried the Media section here on TDH but can only find ESB screenshots. What's the best section for close shots of the helmet details?

Silver is on the left panel and the right ear. Had a much better time this time round with the silver. Seem to have got my PSI nailed down to get a nice coverage with the thinner ratio I’m using (2:1 paint to thinner). I didn’t go as heavy with the coat as I think the metallic is possibly a little thicker to begin with.
