3D Print ESB helmet WIP

On closer inspection of TF’s paint up thread, it appears those parts were supposed to remain silver so I’ll sort that tomorrow. It also transpired that I used grey 106 instead of 79. Doh! Nevermind, something to remember for the BM helmet.

Todays update brings the concrete/beige layer on the rear left panel (28 misted with 103)

And a finished lower right ear:

Now…I seem to have missed the updated colour for this section on TF’s thread so I had sand 93 instead of 94. For those interested, here is the difference. 93 on the left, 94 on the right:

94 does look closer, however - for the purposes of this build, 93 is fine. I just spent a bit longer on it with the wire wool to dull it a little further.

Back panels are done! Few lessons learned along the way. Next time I’m definitely going to do them both together instead of one at a time.

Obviously some surface weathering and touch ups to do but I’ll address those at the end across the whole helmet. Overall though, I think not bad for my first one?

Silver (#11), and grey (#79) damage done and now all marked up for the purple layer. This is where the inaccuracies of the helmet really become clear as the keyholes didn’t match up with the templates at all. Even after scaling and stretching which still didn’t get me a good fit. I did the best I could, this is a big mix of templates and topical.

Maroon layer added and damage areas marked out. Again, this was kind of haphazardly acheived.

I got the templates as close as I could but still had to move it around in between tracing areas on to the helmet to get the placement of each section somewhat correct.

It’s there or thereabouts but not really up to my standards if I’m honest. Hopefully this section will match raf’s templates more closely on my BM helmet.

Don't get discouraged...it's the shape of the helmet that's throwing off the stencils.
Thanks mate, yea I know. I’ve mostly made my peace with it, there’s just an occasional niggling thought that it’s not quite right! It’s still a fun challenge though - as if this paint job wasn’t difficult enough

Also have the right ear done - black arch & white quarter arch included.

At some point I’ll weather it with some brown splatters (suggestions on the best way to achieve that are welcome). Overall I’m pleased although it has come out a bit more ‘cartoony’ than I’d like so this’ll be an area of particular focus next time.

I also think I’ll spring for some metal ears for the BobaMaker helmet. I’m not crazy about the soft edges and corners on these and I think the ones BM includes are resin. Would be nice to just have that raw brushed aluminium on the silver areas.

I’m going to tackle the lower cheeks next.

What do you mean cartoony? I think the red may be a little bright but topical weathering should knock it back.
