Fett from 1986

good point, you maybe right, and it being unusable is a good explanation, Banzain also said his friend may have had other plans with what to do with that area. I had forgotten about the bondo and him saying that. I stand corrected.

Not exactly... the Stunt #2 very clearly has the upper rf ear platform in place.

I wonder what material was used for the upper rf ear platform? Being stunt helmets could it have been rubber or plastic since the helmets would be abused? On Stunt #1 the lower ear is sponge or something, so could the upper ear on Stunt #1 be rubber, plastic etc.? On Stunt #2 could the whole rf side ears parts be rubber, plastic, etc.? If so, then the question is: would the hump even be there (on the helmet), or would the rf ear paltform have been all one piece separate from the helmet altogether meaning the helmet had no hump?

Has anyone touched the stunt ears or know what they were made of?

I was more "standing corrected" that it didn't look it had been modified after being pulled out of the mold, but TF had reminded me of Banzai's post to the contrary. Definately didn't think you were "correcting" me in a parent or teacher sort of way LOL.

Mandalore Fett, you make a good point too that it looks like foam or something. That is where his head hits the sail barge...

Well, from what Banzaii88 told me, his friend made the cast and his intentions may not be to duplicate/replicate the actual ESB/ROTJ stunt helmet. Banzaii88 thinks that his friend might have been trying for a totally different look which explains the missing ear/RF post and the gouges on the right side. This is turning out to be the "missing link" of fett helmets IMO.

NEF, that is what makes this particular helmet so interesting...since it was made in the pre-Albin Johnson days, it could not have been a fan made helmet. And since his friend was given the opportunity by one of the ILM staff to make a cast then therefore the Banzaii helmet has a direct link to a screen casted helmet. Which version helmet it was casted from is what we are all eagerly waiting to find out.

Oh yeah, I was convinced it was cast from an ILM helmet since the first post! I'm interested in seeing which version it was cast from as well as asking enough questions that I learn the history's of some of the other helmets and what relation they might have to his one. I'm also trying to use my very limited knowledge I've picked up from this thread and ones like it to give whatever help I can to the experts by throwing out possibilities that they may or may not have thought about before.

I'm really showing just how limited my knowledge is here, but who's Albin Johnson?

I think it's worth re-mentioning (from Brak's first post, with all this RF ear talk), that this lack-of-RF-platform is a feature that seems to be un-involved with Banzai88's friend's work on the helmet since it is a feature that exists on another helmet in private hands; i.e. time surrounding casting rather than time spent remastering this helmet, and that's why it's so confusing.

Just when you think you have the helmet stuff sorted, something new comes along and you learn a whole lt more. This thread is great and i love it when new stuff turns up

NEF, Albin Johnson is the founder of Vader's Fist A.K.A. 501st Legion which was the first Star Wars costuming club in 1997. It basically started out with fan made stormtrooper armor which Albin and some friends wore at the re-made OTC which came out in the threaters. Then squads and garrisons were formed through the country and then spread around the globe. Detachments such as sandtroopers (MEPD), TDH, clonetroopers (CTN), bikerscout (BSN) and others were formed as specialty clubs thereafter.

I remember the 501st when it was fairly small (a few hundred members maybe). I think I first heard about it in late 98 when I first started working on my fett, I've been in and out of it sense then. I was a member of tubfc listserve at the time. Now that you say that his name sounds familiar.

That was the exact thing I said to Tyler the other day! Whether it is truly a missing link or not, it has certainly spurred the imagination and interest of many and has helped us take some MASSIVE steps forward in sorting out helmet history!

I know what you are trying to say here, but fans have been making movies since the original came out and there was a VERY good fan made Boba back in the very early 80s made by Max Cervantes.

However, to your point, I don't think ANYONE would argue that Banzai's helmet is a custom sculpt. It is very clear it has lineage to the originals... Now... perhaps it was in the process of becoming *gasp* a dented variant, based on the damaged and all that appears to have been purposefully added AFTER the initial casting! :D

Here is a closeup of the stunt #2 ear section.
