Stencil marks

Hi all,
im a very newbie here .... I'm currently painting my first ever helmet .
Im using the stencil method and it looks pretty good so far ( early days tho )
i use carbon paper to mark the stencils on but I've noticed that some of the marks are left on the lighter colour paints . Is there a way to safely erase these ? .... I stupidly tried with a bit of paint thinner and smudged a small section :(
any tips would be appreciated .
Cheers
p

Enamels are completely waterproof as they're oil based and so is acrylic paint once it is completely dry (don't be fooled by the fact it is water based it's not like watercolour).
