Primer cracking.

So I had painted my armor and bucket with primer and then the metal coat. Both seemed fine at this point and everything looked smooth, however, after adding my base coat after masking with liquid latex, the melmet had these "cracks" where I could very clearly see the silver underneath.


Today I sanded the helmet down, scuffed it up but didnt go all the way down to base material. Put on the primer and within 5 minutes when it started drying (automobile primer) the cracks showed up again.


I am using Rustoleum automobile primer, andn rustoleum spray paints.


Does anyone have any suggestions for paints for this not to occur and how can I salvage the helmet.

You primered over silver...and didn't clean it properly...I can see silver in all of those cracks. Take some laquer thinner and a bunch of rags and clean it all off....start from scratch

Is that safe for the resin in the helmet? I dont want to damage it.

In addition to what F4R said, it also looks like you put it on way to heavy. Multiple thin coats always yield better results than one heavy coat.

Thinner will not damage the resin.

laquer thinner...been in the same boat before...similar at least clear coat not playing nice with the white I used....

Use an adhesion promoter next time too.

Might I ask why you are putting on primer after a silver base coat?

Also, I would ditch that automobile primer. That stuff comes out thick because it's meant to fill imperfections. Light, thin coats is what you want.

I've used that exact primer , on most of my armor actually. I applied very light coats and it worked great. Never had primer crack on me, so I'm surprised how bad it happened on your bucket. Hope you can get it off

get all that silver out of the creases....or youll have the same problem. Use a tooth brush

Aww man, had the same thing happen to me when I painted my first Fett bucket... and it was the second to last step on the dome :facepalm

Only exception was mine was the black layer, which I used primer instead of just flat black paint. Same crackly result... damn shame.

It'll be fine as long as you dont soak it in thinner. F4R is spot on. Dirty/ contaminated surface. Probably overspray from another project or sanding dust?

Use short bursts while spraying. Use a sweeping motion. Hard to explain, check out this video for some reference on a spraying technique

Automotive primer Hi-gear, can be sanded, never had such problems.

The paint then can be used absolutely any, but not "hammered".
