Possible pre-pro jumpsuit fabric at Jo-Ann's?

Hi all,

First off, to the mods--please feel free to merge this with another jumpsuit thread if you feel it's appropriate. I did search through the soft parts forum but didn't see an answer to this question.

I am looking for fabric to use for a pre-pro Boba Fett suit. I know the advice here is often to get a white suit and dye it. In the end, I may do that, but I wanted your opinions on a few fabrics I found at Jo-Ann's recently. Of course, this only works if you have seen the fabric yourself or are already familiar with them.

The three that I found that I thought might work (possibly with a bit of dyeing, fading, etc.) are:

1. Smoke blue solid twill, #720-1981,
2. Dark smoke blue solid twill, #720-1890, and
3. Medium blue solid twill, #719-9961.

So if anyone's already seen any of these fabrics or comes across them soon, please let me know what you think. It looks like they have the right diagonal pattern, but I just can't make up my mind if one of these is nearly spot-on for the color.

Dye it Really, You'll spend more time looking then you will making. I'm pretty sure the original suit was dyed, Tylerdurden had a pic from one of the exhibits where you can see that the ROTJ suit was a bluish color at one time that had been bleached or washed out that the color had faded, the blueish color was still evident in the folds in the cuff of the arm. The original suit ... or suits were white and then colored for the movie versions when the white (albino fett) super trooper role was changed into the bounty hunter Boba Fett. I made a white suit and dyed it ... dyed it about 4 times before I found a combination that worked. It was 2 boxes royal blue and 1 box teal. I dyed it in the washing machine, it comes out dark, but after 2 washes, it really lightens up. If you would like to see the results I can show you some pics.

That prepro jumsuit is a flight suit that you can get from an army surplus store. Its the same exact color a blue/Green mix. you can get them to fit really good to.

I doubt that is the case, since I am yet to see a store bought jumpsuit that looks like Fetts. Be careful as a noob here not to just come out and say, "this is the final answer."

TK-5501 can you get fabric samples from Jo-anne and then post pics of them? Most of the time they will give you an inch that you can take home for just this reason.

Yeah, I think I'll go to Jo-Ann's tomorrow or Saturday and see about getting a sample of each. Of course, once I take photos of them, then we get into the "fun" area of lighting affecting the color!

Cal196, certainly anything is possible, but I haven't seen a flight suit that had the right color yet--but then, to be fair, it's been a while since I've been to the surplus store. I'll look the next time I'm in there, but I think the pre-pro suit is firmly in-between shades of flight suits I've seen, and I don't think they'd have the diagonal pattern to the weave.

I'll update with pics of samples once I get them.

You have to admit its close, i know people who build costumes want a perfect match that is all fine and good. Only offering and alternitive to sewing.

At $60 you would have to buy 2 suits to get enough fabric to make the extra exterior pockets and to double up on the sleeves, so even a surplus suit would end up costing $120, I believe the bulk order for jumpsuits is only $75, and there is no need to modify it.

Hey Rob, I didn't even relize it was you I had to look up your tk# as a reminder. Are you going to Dragon Con? If so bring your fabric samples and I can see them in person.

It's a shame people get this response on a genuine contribution to the cause. Regardless of "noob" status.

I have seen both fabric at Jo-Ann's and jumpsuits that can be modified to the finest of detail so there is no need to "doubt the case."

I have been making costumes since I was 12 and am now 33, I aint no noob...............er to boba fett I am definitly, this is my first attempt.

When I get a cam I will post old stuff I have done, and yes I seen a guy at a convention with the exact same color blue/green suit, I asked how he made it He said army surplus, WWII navy the color was off green and it already had the shin pouches made onto it without alteration, and no back pockets.

I thought it was pretty awesome.

I think it's great to have several jumpsuit alternatives to accomodate personal preferences and different budgets.

That being said, and as I have mentioned on a couple other occasions, <acronym title="Rouge Studios">RS</acronym> spoke to the person who painted several Fett suits , including the Preproduction jumpsuits, and the jumpsuits were plain white and dyed blue.

I'm not sure I see any hint or reason for there to be green in the jumpsuit.

Also, let's ease up on the "noob" talk, and take a moment to re-read the "Respect" portion of the Code of Conduct. Just because someone is new here does not mean they are new to the hobby.

I also agree that the "green tones" could be subjective depending on several factors....all of which have been addressed depending on monitor calibration, print specifics including dated and reproduced media.

Without definative proof, but coming from a dyed fabric background, certain colors do fade over time, regardless of exposure, laundering or otherwise.

I'm more impressed with those that nail down a certain "appearance" with respects to all factors when it comes to the BF costume.

OK, I went to Jo-Ann's the other day but have been so busy with work and DragonCon preps I haven't had time to post. Basically, I had to go to both stores here and they were out of some of the twills (probably because they had a sale going). I got a swatch of the Dark smoke blue solid twill, #720-1890, and in desperation I also grabbed a swatch of Sunbleached denim, #256-3963.

I won't get a chance to upload pics till after DragonCon. But a new wrinkle: I checked price info from a certain vendor, and it's not that much more for the jumpsuit if they use their fabric. So as long as they have a close enough match to the pre-pro suit fabric, I may just end up going that route. After DC I'll post the pics of the swatches, and try to see if they got more stock in so I can get pics of the others too, to share those.

A military sage colored flightsuit will a take far more work to convert than actually making one from scratch. Nomex is not historically known for changing color that well. I'm wearing one right now, and I can tell you it isn't even close to the right color for any of the suits. Not to mention that you would have to remove all the external pockets and velcro to make it accurate. And let me tell ya, some are stitched into the side seams, but all of them are a pain to remove. It'll probably take longer to rip out the seams than to make a new suit. There used to be a grey version of the nomex suit, but they haven't been used by the military for a few year now.
