The table top isn't actually joined to the legs. The 2x6's are screwed into the legs with the pocket hole screws, and then the 2x6's are screwed into the table top the same way. It doesn't affect the sturdiness at all, we've put it to the test and it's still perfect.

Showed this to my wife, with a hopeful look in my eye... she rolled hers at me.

She did admit that it was pretty awesome. I think I may be able to try something similar once the office space in my new house is cleared out, but with smaller battery run LED's that change colors through a frosted covering.
