They are not leather, but 1” nylon webbing straps. The length is really based on your size mostly. There should be a 6-8” gap between the two girth belt buckles, plus whatever it takes to attach to the buckles themselves.

Rather than punch holes in mine, I heated the back end of a drill bit and melted my holes through. They have not frayed.

That's a great idea! I punched mine and then cauterized the hole with a torch. You managed to combine the steps! Nice!

I used the same method. I used a heated punch. Works like a charm.

My soldering iron worked like a champ - perfect hole and it's cauterized.
