Thanks again! I really do hope it looks better when I get it all together and clean it up all the messy glue and edges.

Hopefull Fett, It really is pretty easy...so far. I am just making it up as I go, but I found the buckets, printed out the templates, cut them out, traced them onto the buckets (around of course) and cut them out with a cut off attachment on my dremel. Then I took a batting helmet and tried my best to cut it straight (I eyeballed the height of it using the profile in the templates). I then just glued one layer of the mask to the helmet, then I glued the outer layer to that layer (after a day of glue drying). I am currently working on the cheekbone pieces which are tricky. I have cut them into a few pieces (each end of the cheekbone) and used them to fix it in place. The next step will be to fill it in. Once that is done and I have glued the crap out of it from the inside I will take body filler to all the bad parts, seams, etc. Then I can start working on some of the details.

Feeble?!?! That looks great!!! Any ideas how you will get the triangle in the forehead yet? I think I see a dent on top. How did you make it?

I will dremel the triangles in at the last moment. The dent (sorry for tthe pic) was created by drilling a huge hole in the top of the dome, filling it with resin and then poking a rounded hammer into it (see attached pic)

Good old bondo! I'll have to do the same thing.

I added the lower parts of the curved cheek pieces last night. IOt was a bit tricky....thank god I have lots of little clamps and tape on hand. Now that the face is held together I should be able to fill in the rest of the cheeks. If I need to I'll heat them up as suggested.

Hankey, man looking good! I may have to do that, it already looks better than my DP97 (although it was free, so I ain't gonna complain).

mine is rough rough rough, and whoever had this ripped off the right earcap. so I gotta rebuild that and build a rangefinder. I've been reading sss tutorial on that one...friggin awesome.

How are you gonna do the earcaps? anyone got any good tutorials on that? and I noticed you have an extra stalk in that first pic? you should mail that one down to me!!

oh and the other scratchbuilt I've seen the guy sectioned the helmet and made it bigger...did you have to do that too..the helmet looks like you didn't have to.

Free is good. If it wasn't for you and your DP '97 I woulnd't have had the urge to do this!!!! GREAT pic of the VERY young Boba Fett.

I eyeballed the templates and I really should have widened my helmet, but I decided to just skip that and make it a little narrow. It's about 1/2" too narrow..but don't tell anyone.

I haven't even thought about the earcaps yet. I'll have to figure something out..maybe plastic or aluminum.

Oh..about the aluminum stalk..I work at a steel fab shop. Check your PM! :cheers

Wow, that looks awesome! I hope to soon join the good ol' bucket scratchbuilders club.

If you don't mind telling, where in Home Depot did you find this bucket? And if they come in different sizes, which one did you get? How many buckets did it take? Sorry about all the questions, I'm just in awe by this helmet so far.

Also, I really like the way you're doing the cheek parts. Those looked like the trickiest part of the helmet, and what you're doing looks like it's working well.

And if your not busy could you shoot me a PM on that RF? It looks great!

Here is what I did last night.

I got the cheek pieces filled in. They didn't fit very well....but bondo will fix that later.

I also cut away more of the pieces holding the chin together. I left a piece that is set just a bit back so the lens is able to slide overtop. This way it will hold it's shape, and the lens will still go in place.

MandoMan, The buckets were everywhere...almost every aisle had a stack of them at the end on the floor. Check your PM about the RF.

Both of those scratchbuilds are amazing! I just love the way you can spend all that time modelling, decide somethings not quite right and cut the whole thing in half!!! I found a quick method for the forhead arrows was to drill two round holes ruffly in the right position, put masking tape behind. cut the arrow shapes from 2mm plastic card, over fill the two holes with car body filler. Then while still wet, push your arrow shapes in, leave to dry. if you leave them slightly proud you can pop the arrows out with a knife, sand the surface flat with wet and dry....this also worked with the oval cheek slot.

I had to use body filler in the garage with a heater aimed right on the helmet cuz it's cold out there (the fumes smell up the house). I spent the day sanding, sanding, sanding.

I had troubles with some areas where the glue was since the one glue that worked (PLumbers Goop) is pretty elastic, so it can't be sanded. I tried to cover it with filler.

It really does look better in person, and once the final paint job is done I want it to look beat up anyways...so it will be fine.

I am happy with how the dent turned out (using filler). I have painted it silver, and will use latex masking liguid that I got at Michael's to paint on the paint chips and scratches..then when I paint over top and remove the latex...you will see the metal underneath. I found all this from these great forums!

GLUE has been a big issue.

I just use superglue and sometimes a hotglue gun.

You are kidding me Terminal - when it comes to scratch builts, you reign supreme. My bucket isn't even in the same league as yours

I think the scratch builds really are in a catagory all in their own. I mean every Manda would make their own wouldn't they? There in lys everyones own distinct helmet. It has the basic Fett shape with T-visor but like the paint schemes and size of the helmet along minor differences here and there to signify that mandos taste or family's history or their own personal manda accomplishiments. I understand from Karen T.'s writings that they are sometimes handed down to sibs or if a fellow manda has fallen you may keep their helmet as a homage to their legacy.
Thats why i like these scratch built helmets. I myself haven't done it yet, but i would like to see what Manda spirit / design dwells within me in making my own helmet.
