Helmet question

Thank you guys! So glad I asked here before jumping into a purchase I'd regret

Now I'm just curious, what exactly is wrong with the makers mentioned in this thread? This is a newbie talking, but isn't a B grade helmet better than no helmet... or paying the price or time of having an A grade helmet?

Just looking for thoughts. You guys are amazing

Well, they seem to be an assortment of recasters. Moral arguments on recasting aside it is usually the case that the product is inferior in terms of quality, size, and detail.

Even the very best copies by the best makers have generational shrinkage and softening in the first generation although it may be minimal and difficult to detect with the naked eye (and that would be the work of an experienced individual working with the best tools and materials). But you still get a great copy.

Replace the best maker possessed of much experience who is using the best tools and materials with someone inexperienced working in their garage, using mediocre materials and the product suffers greatly; generational shrinkage and distortion sets in hence even from poor pictures we were able to detect a mishapen dome and small size almost straight away (unless this is the goalkeeper of our dreams).

Only you can decide if a B grade helmet is better than no helmet. It might get you into the 501st (I wouldnt know as not a member but I doubt it) but your B grade helmet, that might pass muster on its own, will be next to lots of those A grade helmets. That might sound like elitism but it isn't; it's just a fact.

My rough calculations tell me you could buy a better kit than this and all the paints for less than $325 and paint it yourself. That would be a lot of fun and you can do better than this paint job even first time around.
@Major can advise you on 501st and whether this gets you in.

Thank you all for your support.

I'll go back to my original plan and order one from animefan. I've seen and heard amazing things about his quality.

Now I'll just need to figure out if I'll commission someone to paint it for me or do it myself. I've felt encouraged to do it myself thanks to you guys (the thought is still daunting though). We'll see

But I'm definitely passing on this helmet. Thanks for the support!

Painting it yourself isn't all that hard, do your research, get the stencils, watch some how to videos(most found here) and take your time with it and you'll be more satisfied in the long run. A 501st Fett is an adventure, not a weekend project. Like everyone said above, get a quality helmet from the get go. My first bucket and armor were eBay recasts and mystery kits, in the end I just ended up replacing them with the quality stuff later on.

I echo all the good advice already mentioned. Do it once, do it right. You'll be happy with the animefan lid, and with a little time and elbow grease, I'm sure you'll paint a fine helmet.

@kelev @syllander @intwenothor @DeathProof @Fett4reaLs okay guys here is the story. I have a buddy from my Garrison who started a ROTJ Build prior to me meeting him. He told me that he ordered his Helmet, armor pieces, gauntlets, vests, hair braids, belt, jetpack, nearly everything from another 501st member who does Fett commissions on the cheap. This magic guy who did all this work is named Randy Johnson from an unnamed Arizona Garrison. Well my buddy wanted me to help him piece everything together since I had my Boba Fett already approved. When I saw all the stuff he had with him. It was crap. Literally, horrible. I felt bad because the quality, craftsmen ship was poor and the paint job was inaccurate poorly executed. I felt bad he had spent all his hard earned money on this stuff. Long story short, everything needs to be replaced or repainted. The paint application on all the armor and helmet is basically only a base layer of green. All the silver, yellow, weathering and damage is applied topically with a paint brush or sponge.

In regards to the helmet, it is a poor quality cast, in which the ear did not even stay in place and kept falling off, the rangefinder stalk would not stay in the up position and the helmet felt brittle. The ROTJ style was inaccurate in color scheme, damage and at first glance is okay, but far from acceptable. Here are a few images of the helmet and armor:

Here are the gauntlets from the same guy who did the helmet. We actually had to install the darts.

This is what they looked like after I repainted and modified them for my buddy:

I urge Members on here to remember this thread and share with anyone who wants or is considering buying stuff from this guy. Just because someone is a 501st Member, does not mean they know Fett.
It is still going to take alot more time and money to make the rest of his pieces right.

More like D grade

Lol, I was trying to be nice, and diving off of an ambien cliff about to Hit the bottom. My first Fett transaction was with him(RJ) and was definitely a learning experience. Steer clear, and tell your friends to do the same.

I personally do not even like using the term "501st approved" in any form because it means next to nothing. Just words.

What is weird is I had just seen this guys business come across my Facebook page from one of the prop groups showing off all his different masks and models and sabers and stuff. It was just before reading this post yesterday. Odd timing

sithplanet/Ewokus/korbanth guy got me for $100 on a chest box for a at-at driver. Then tried to con me into also getting the front and back armor at the same time to for a package deal. Got the chest and it was crap.
we need a section on tdh for people and vendors to stay away from like starfortress and Ewokus. So new people that join and others can see some type of feedback about shady sellers out there.

I was going to comment that I can only speak about his Boba Fett Commissions and they are bad and not of his other work. But it seems like its is bad all around.
Sorry that you got mixed in it as well.

Can anyone who has seen one of these in person comment on the sizing of this helmet?
Its size is comparable to my Bobamaker Helmet, which is on the smaller size.

I did not do a deep comparison. I was just disappointed and angered by what I saw. But we will do our best to redo it right.

Very glad you reached out before you purchased! I will put my 2 Cents in with the concensus of putting your money into a quality bucket.

I saw his helmets on ebay and I actually bid on one. After I placed my bid I got to thinking about it and I decided to go with a FP from animefan. What made me change my mind was that there wasn't enough pictures posted of this bucket to know the size or the actual quality. So I backed out and got a quality lid and am playing the waiting game for it. After reading this thread I'm really glad I changed my mind and I'm not looking back.
