General WIP ESB Boba Fett; scratch build progress updates

great suit! really like your custom made shoes! they came out very well! (y)

Thanks. They're also pretty comfy. I put some foam insoles inside for extra comfort/smell control. The weathering on the sides of the soles will have to be redone periodically. So far the toe spikes and their attachment are holding up great despite lots of tripping.

Made a little progress on my EE-3. Cannibalized some key rings to get the little swivel things, then some filing to remove a shouldered part, and some careful drilling and epoxy to mount them in my stock and handle. Re-purpoosed a broken binocular case strap for its pigskin, restored with some hubbard's shoe grease to make it supple again, and eyeballed the length at around 27". I sewed the ends into loops rather than tying the strap though itself so as not to tear eventually. Very happy with the results.

Looks great Greg. I had problems with my rifle sling coming off, I caught it on my knees or something and pulled it off. I intend to sew it with a couple of hidden stitches. Your stock turned out great!

And my favorite:

And more recently I switched to Moss Green for my dome and cheeks:

After doing recent troops, it's obvious I need to make some changes like smoothing the sharp edges of the EE-3 greeblies where the can rub on my armor, I have a lot of paint damage there.

Man this build was awesome with alot of badass ideas thank you so much for sharing! do you by chance remember where you got the toy gun for your EE3 my costume fund is running on empty and I need to try n save some money by building my own and if I could get even remotely close to how great yours turned out ill be happy. Thanks again

Thanks guys, the base gun is a western style plastic revolver from a seasonal costume shop. Cost about $7 (overpriced), the trigger moves and the hammer moves as well.

I added cardboard barrel, pvc scope, some cardboard parts, foamcore posterboard stock, good for halloween but not near accurate.

IMG_20151220_205812938.jpg

Later I swapped in a better scope from pvc conduit parts, a 1.5" ABS sink drain tailpiece barrel, 1.5" chromed brass flash tube drilled according to templates here. Also made a real wood stock, aluminum stock extension. Fellow TDH member sent me some stock greeblies. Sling is old binoculars case strap I had.

Then I used a different wider strap, keychain parts to mount the sling to approximately the right places.

Soon, before our local large convention 3/11, I want to improve the barrel shape by expanding it to the rear so it's tapered, make more accurate scope mounts and a larger stronger handle/breach section. This will delete the original toy gun parts from the prop. It will fit better and be stronger, right now the plastic toy gun parts are near breaking with the added weight of the more realistic parts. I'll add the breach shape and breach greeblies then as well. Eventually, maybe when I'm doing this work, I'll transfer the electronics of my toy ROTJ EE-3 to this, to have sound and LED flash. That's all I have planned.

I estimate my total actual money spent at about $50 including parts and paint. Not including my time of course...

A few updates. This past friday and saturday I trooped with Garrison Titan at Seattle's Emeral City Comic Con. Wow, it was an experience, my first really big Con. Trooping with my Garrison buddies was great, we had a huge turnout and a great display room with photo props accepting donations for Children's Hospital.

Anyway prior to the troop, I did some updates. I painted the inside of my helmet with some satin black acrylic paint. Make it look very tidy and also sealed some of the exposed Illustration board.

IMG_20170220_210801809_HDR.jpg

Next I turned my attention to my EE-3. It's been fine but not very accurate up to now, I described how I build it in an above post. I wanted a more accurate barrel, breach, and scope mounts. I tried tapering ABS and PVC pipe by cutting a slit and inserting a wedge, which didn't work. I next tried tapering a 2" ABS pipe on my belt sander, but it overheated and deformed. Next I asked a fellow garrison member if he could 3D print the parts, he did at our next armor party.

IMG_20170225_105435027.jpg IMG_20170225_161331821.jpg

And I made a new handle section from 5/8" plywood. Originally I was going to make it from aluminum but my piece wasn't thick enough. Also fabbed a trigger and trigger guard from aluminum, and started swapping in the electronics from my toy ROTJ blaster.

IMG_20170227_214013.jpg

Made a new flash tube as well so it was long enough to fit into the new barrel and still be long enough. Looking good in black primer:

Here's the electronics board. Attached to this I soldered new trigger, speaker and and power wires. I glued the speaker to the flash diffuser (after cutting the diffuser down to make it shorter and fit inside the flash tube) and used a couple of set screws to secure the parts in the front and back. I adapter a 3-AAA battery holder from a flashlight and it slips into the back, like loading a flare, slips into a 1-1/4" drain tailpiece that sleeves in the 3D barrel. The breach is held shut with a small screw.

Here's some pipe strap used as scope mounts. Not 100% accurate but worked well enough.

IMG_20170301_205053951.jpg

The finished product. I used a dark metallic bronze paint dulled with a dusting of black primer, topical silver damage and weathering in a few places, and sanded to bare metal on some edges where possible. Also shaped a wood handle part from more cedar. I tried impressing the diamond pattern on it, but didn't have much success, so I drew it on. Some light stain and a clear coat to protect it. The whole thing is more substantial and feels good to carry, not too heavy.

Here's a video of the Pew! Pew! effects. Pretty happy with the results.

And trooping at one of the photo op booths.

Recently did two troops, one for my Garrison's room at Emerald City Comic Con. More on that one later. Last night I met up with Timberline Garrison out of Idaho for a troop at Treasure Valley Community College for their Star Wars Invades Treasure Vally event. It was almost 1000 mile drive round trip but I got to meet Mr. Fett himself, Jeremy Bulloch. Also there were Bonnie Piesse (young Aunt Beru), Paul Blake (Greedo), Mike Edmonds (Lograth). Mr/ Bulloch is as nice as his reputation. He and Paul Blake had a great rapport onstage for the panel, really they all did, it was fun. Got signed photos and pics, below. Somehow in the kerfuffel I neglected to get a pic with Mr. Edmonds. He was pretty fun to talk to as well, a bit sardonic. Mr. Blake had tons of energy and a wry wit, and Mr. Bulloch was pretty low key but quick with a subtle joke or jab at the other guys. He liked my costume and we talked about his, which he said is much lighter than the original. His wife is equally nice. They stayed pretty late signing and talking to fans.

An image of the panel discussion, they also took questions from the audience.

Here I am with some Timberline Garrison members.

And finally Mr. Bulloch and I.

I didn't have him sign my armor or helmet because they're such works in progress and I didn't want to lose it. So I opted for a signed picture. In exchange for trooping, the event gave us "VIP" packages which included pics for signatures, the signatures ($20 otherwise) a poster, trading cards and a badge thing. I thought it was nice even though I was prepared to pay if needed. We posed for lots of pics with fans and answered a lot of questions about the 501st, our costumes and related topics.
