So just to clarify with the jetpack, that was in fact painted by me (Dom, I think you got it confused when I stated that I didn't paint rnbuda's pack).
The "white wash" you're referring to is in fact dry-brush silver. The camera didn't do a lot of the weathering justice, so some play in Lightroom to color-correct what we should be seeing gave me this:
Due to how garbage the clarity on some of those behind-the-scenes ESB photos are, we'll never really know which exact weathering methods were used for the jetpack. It's apparent that the dark gray "squiggles" are topical, and there are smudges of dark grays, blacks, and browns that were either brushed or sponged on, in addition to some obvious airbrush work.
But back to the "white-wash", again, it's dry-brush silver carefully painted in the shapes of what we can see in photos of the actual pack. While we can definitely make the argument that those areas are Joe Johnston, Sandy D's boyfriend, or whoever was working on it sanded down, unfortunately, any time I've seen an ESB pack with someone taking some sandpaper to it, the shapes and scratches rarely come out accurate...more of an "interpretation" of what the damage should be.
Overall, I couldn't be more proud of how this suit turned out for bcurtis. This isn't just my paintwork, it's HIS motivation to get the parts right, his countless trips to the tailor for the flightsuit and vest, as well as genetics giving him an identical build and stature to John Morton at the time of filming ESB. Hands down one of the most screen-accurate ESB's I've seen, and it's mostly due to his striving for complete accuracy. It only gets better from here, since he's planning on snagging a gorgeous Clothears vest (I've worked with them, and the level of accuracy, weight, drape, and texture is unmatched), as well as upgrading from his current Fettpride "FPA" armor to a more accurate sculpt (Most of us here can agree that especially the chest plates are pretty under-sized in comparison to the real deal. There's also actual measurement data to back that up, but that's not my place to discuss that).
Couldn't have built this for a nicer guy. His patience and understanding during this build was truly remarkable, and he's a solid friend.
Hell yea ,
