ToEleven's helmet and ESB Paintup for Level3Fett

Whew...the dome is now a thing.

We've got our ears on...about time. Here I've added the white paint smudges, dark gray airbrushing around the dent and cheek bottoms and mud splatter stuff.

For the ear decals I lay down a layer painters of tape on my cutting mat...use elmers spray glue on the back of the ear template and affix it over the tape...then cut the outside line of the ear and the profile of the decal through the template & tape...then affix the tape to the earcap. I've found this to be the easiest way for me to tackle this delicate part of the ESB paintup. I then cut out what's left on the mat for the white.

For the symbols I cut small strips of masking tape and do them 1 section

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it.

Someone asked me for a list of colors. I borrowed ideas from some of Raizo's work and others. Hopefully this helps.

--------------------------------
Primed with Krylon gray ultra flat

[Dark (Reefer) Gray Layer] (all over the helmet)
Tamiya XF-24 dark gray & XF-2 white acrylics..not exact science I went with maybe 20:1 but it could go a little lighter. The reference pics are under such a hot flash it's really hard to tell.

[Silver Damage]
MM Chrome Silver Enamel (topical with a fine detail brush)

[Light gray damage - all over]
Tamiya XF-2 White Acrylic & Tamiya XF-18 Medium Blue (no formula, but enough to give it a light grayish blueish look)

[Back Panels]
1st Layer: dark gray (see above)
2nd Layer: MM (Testors Model Masters) Concrete Flat Acrylic
3rd Layer: MM RLM73 Acrylic
Weathered topical: MM RLM73 & a drop or 2 of Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black Acrylic (just a darker version of the RLM73 layer)
Note: I did some topical touchup with the acrylics, but I had a really hard time getting them to go down without clumping. I would try enamels for any topical work in the future.

[Dome & Lower Cheek]
1st Layer: dark gray (see above)
2nd Layer: MM Panzer Olive Green/Grun Arylic & Tamiya XF-2 White Acrylic 4:3 (test this...go 2:1 if it comes out too light. I thought straight MM POG was a little too dark)
Weathered topical: Tamiya XF-24 (For topical application I would find an Enamel alternative next time)
Kill Stripes: Tamiya XF-3 Flat Yellow acrylic over entire killstripe section with MM International Orange acrylic oversprayed & faded back to front

[Upper Cheek]
1st Layer: dark gray (see above)
2nd Layer: Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black Acrylic

[Mandibles Face, Trim & Key Slots]
1st Layer: dark gray (see above)
2nd Layer: MM Caboose Red with a few drops of MM Dark Blue (basically start with red and add drops of blue until its a dark maroon)
3rd Layer: MM Insignia Red - Up in the air as to whether this is dark enough. Maybe add a few drops of Tamiya XF-9 Hull Red acrylic.

[Right Ear]
Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow & XF-2 Yellow maybe 10:1 (the XF-59 is a little dull and needs the yellow to brighten it up)
Just use the same Dark Gray and Silver for the damage...I went topical with both.

[Left Ear]
1st Layer: MM Concrete Flat Acrylic & Tamiya XF-2 White (just enough to lighten a little)
2nd Layer: Tamiya XF-65 Field Gray(this is just an olive green) & Tamiya XF-2 White (just enough to lighten a little)
Topical: MM Caboose Red

[Dent & Cheeks airbrush weathering]
Tamiya XF-24 Dark Gray

For a grimy weathering (not the dent and cheeks) I mixed some black acrylic craft paint with windex in a cup and dipped a rag in it and kind of went to town.

For the brown stains I used a mix of brown and yellow ochre acrylic craft paint with windex and dabbed it on with a chip brush. It doesn't sink in too deep so you can buff it off with a little steel wool if you need to.

For the mud splatter i just used my finger to flick the bristles of the chip brush onto the right side of the helmet with my same brown/yellow ochre mix.

Wonderful timing, As I just received the helmet (lacking RF install), to give you a side by side with my MR.

ToEleven's Helmet is amazing. He is a true artist and excellent craftsman.

Going to have to build a taller stand...no reason for this to sit below the MR.

Excellent work J.

Aw shucks. Thanks man. Really cool seeing it next to the MR.
