SE Boba Fett build

Thanks guys, not long till I have to go out and get the paints now, just some more prepping to do and im there.

Well I had some free time today, so I decided to have a go at fitting that lovely Borden to the lid. Having seen a reference photo of how the original was attached, i decided to try it.

I first had to remove the original cast piece to replace with the SS one.

I used the sanding rotary drum on the dremel to sand most of the Borden down, then used some 150 grit sandpaper to get it flat and flush with the rest of the cheek.

Then using my dremel, I drilled out the hole, making sure it was bigger on the outside and smaller on the inside, this was so the Borden would not fully fit through, yet remained in the position I wanted it to be.

DSCF1005.jpg

I then cut down a screw, and permanently glued it to the back of the Borden.

DSCF1007.jpg

Then I pushed the Borden into the hole, and using a washer and nut I secured the Borden in place.

DSCF1009.jpg

And there is the installed Borden, also removable for when you want to paint the lid. Also if you cant tell, I also went ahead and cut out the visor :p This is just a straight up cut, so I still need to hit it with the sanding block to get it nice and level.

Next up will be the ears, as I seem to have misplaced my needle files lol. And I need to go and buy some more nuts and bolts for the ears and the visor. But its coming together nicely, I even put my Stormrider Kit in it earlier and I almost had to change my underwear :p

Thanks for looking,
Updates soon,

So I have been managing to find time to work on the helmet, and yesterday and today I managed to get the brunt of the prep work done.

Like I said I wanted the helmet to have removable ears, to do this I firstly marked out where I wanted the screws to be in the helmet, then using my dremel I drilled them out (should have used the drill but I was being lazy)

DSCF1058.jpg

I then placed the ear cap on the helmet, and simply poked a pen through the previously drilled holes to mark where I needed to drill the ear cap. Again using the dremel I drilled two small channels for the screw to fit into

DSCF1060.jpg

I then cut the heads off of two screws, and just glued them in the holes I drilled.

DSCF1062.jpg

Once dry, I then placed the ear pieces onto the helmet and simply secure them using a washer and nut.

DSCF1066.jpg

I repeated this for all the other pieces minus the ear cap section, knowing that I wanted a RC set up I didn't want the inside to be cluttered with two many nuts and bolts. I then gave the lid a quick wet sand and primer, and attached the RF stalk and visor to see how the assembled lid will look like.

When I find the time now Ive just got to cut out those key slots, and there are one or two blemishes on the lid that need to be sanded out, but other than that I should be able to paint this thing before the month is out

Cheers,

Welsh

What an amazing thread. I love just scrolling through the building process. You have a keen eye for details. Wow. I cannot wait to see your complete suit. WOW. I just kept thinking, what a beautiful suit! Keep up the amaaaazing work.

Wow guys thank you so much for the compliments, really means alot. But without this site none of this would have been possible.

Well anyways im back at the fett. Things have been really hectic for me recently but its all started to die down a bit, so I can now start working at my fett again. Ive been working away at getting my helmet ready, and last night I did the last big bit of prep work in cutting out the back key slots. Today I just finished up applying the physical damage to the lid using a dremel, and now all it needs is a quick go over with some 1200 grit sandpaper. What do you think?

The visor isnt the final one, nor is it securely held in place. With the awesome weather we're having wales, im planning to start painting this on Tuesday, so watch this space :D
Also my RF stalk is aluminium, does anyone have any ideas on how to attach the RF to it? My RF is a terminalfettlers if that makes a difference.
Thanks,

Welsh

Looks great mate. As for the RF stalk. I have mine as a push-fit. In other words, it is just on there quite tight, no glue or anything holding it on. That may have to change but I think it is ok.

Thank you very much guys.

Okay so ive been busy working on the helmet, its taking a little longer than usual but I'll explain that once the paintjob is finished. So having prepped the helmet and applied the physical damage, I then added the first layer.

The silver is the only rattle can I use other than the primer. I find that once applied and prepped, it really does look like a metal finish that I really like.

DSCF1259.jpg

Only downside is that if you apply it to heavily, the paint will start to have that orange peel texture, so thin misting layers are done, takes about 2-3 hours going to the lid every 20 minutes but its worth it.

DSCF1260.jpg

After leaving the silver dry fully over night, I then gave it a very gentle buff with some 1500 grit wet & dry. This will hopefully help the other paints to stick to this, while also removing any imperfections that were on the paint.

I then carefully masked up the back panels as thats what I intend to paint first, get the hardest part out of the way

DSCF1265.jpg

Next I took the PDF template files ( I forgot who created these but they are incredible, so thanks) And using the separation files, took the silver layer, And scaled them to the size of the helmet im working on and printed it out. After cutting it out, it lines up almost perfectly with the actual panels.

Being a bank holiday weekend, all of the shops are shut so thats as far as I can go with the helmet at present. With the templates now printed out, all I need to do is place graphite paper underneath and trace the damage on, then onto painting the second layer :happy

Update,
Managed to go out and get all the paints, thinners etc... for the project.
So firstly Using the stencils I printed out and some graphite paper or wax paper,

DSCF1278.jpg

I then placed the graphite paper underneath the stencil and placed it on the helmet. Then drawing around the details and scratches, it transfers straight onto the helmet.

Then its the usual masking process followed by applying the correct layer of paint.

DSCF1285.jpg

I then repeated this process using the different layers of stencil for each color, when each colour was dry, I buffed it over with some 1500 grit sandpaper, this was done until I completed the back panels.

Really happy with how it turned out, I think the scaling and positions is decent as well. I found Using the stencils is so much quicker surprisingly than free handing it. If the weather is still nice now over the weekend I'll start working on the dome and lower cheeks.
Until then,

Welsh

You are doing an amazing job. So much patience. Would you want to use a black wrap instead of white? I have one that I cant use that I would donate to you for the project if you want. I cant sell it because it needs a little trimming on the back that you obviously can do without any problems:)

Super job m8.
