ROTJ jetpack with rattle cans (photos)

New Hunter
Thought I’d post images of the paint job I did for my ROTJ jetpack. To be clear, I haven’t been completing my build to a 501st standard at all and this jetpack is missing some greeblies of which I’m aware. I’m just out to make something that looks movie quality to a novice. I’ve also just used rattle cans, acrylic paint and a file to achieve this as I don’t have an airbrush. With all that considered, I don’t think it’s a bad job at all. I received the fibreglass jetpack from a forum member a few months ago (green paint job) and managed to smash this out recently over the course of two weeks. The images are fairly self explanatory but happy to discuss any particular bits in detail. Enjoy!

What blue did you go with ?
Went with a pair of blue colours. Initially, I started with Plastikote ‘Satin night navy’ but that came out quite dark so I bought a smaller can of Plastikote ‘Harbour blue’ to dust over the top of it. That served two purposes - 1) brightened up the overall blue of the jetpack and 2) created a bit of contrast with the darker navy blue underneath and in the recesses.

Here’s the full selection of rattle cans I used for the jetpack. Additionally, the chipping was done with a combination of humbrol masking fluid and manual chipping and scratching with a small file.

All parts were primed with jenolite grey primer filler, and then given a coat of silver.
The rocket utilised the white with a gradual dust of black to get that smooth transition from black to white. The top of the rocket was a combo of dusting silver and red to give a metallic red finish.
The blue was achieved with a base coat of navy blue, with a dust of the lighter blue. The yellow included some dusting of black and brown to darken it up a bit.
The red sections were actually painted on by brush with acrylic paint. I mixed red and black together to create a shade similar to the red rattle can colour. Basically, I had grown tired of masking after doing the blue and yellow sections and since there weren’t many large flat areas for the red, where brush strokes would be too visible, I decided to go down that route. I still took care to water the paint down and actually, the brush strokes are minimal and not very noticeable.
The white was done in a similar way to the yellow, with a bit of brown and black dusting to simulate grime and dirt. The whole jetpack was then given that brown and black dusting to bring all the colours together and tone down the vibrancy.
The markings were all done freehand with black acrylic and a paintbrush.
After completion the whole thing was given a coat of clear Matt rust-oleum polyurethane finish (not pictured).

Well done!
I did my jet pack with rattle cans too. I do own an air bush and only used it for the dirt in the corners.
FYI I am in the 501st and in my opinion yours meets the requirements.

Cheers man! That jetpack looks great! Makes me think I should try and get all the parts and greeblies for mine to finish it off. I guess that’s the thing with starting a boba fett project, there’s always ways to improve and modify the suit over time and you don’t have to start at perfection from the get go. I’ve almost reached a point where I’ve got a finished costume, it’s by no means 100% accurate but that’s not to say over the years I can’t upgrade parts to the point where it is?

Thank you for the compliments!

Me and Lazerjock essentially did our ROTJ Fett's at nearly the same time. He's got an excellent setup and kudos for him (and YOU) for doing it all via rattlers!

I took the other approach and did mine via Airbrush. I just liked having a wider array of colors to choose from. And here is what I came up with...

Iron's JP 2.jpg

Iron's Updated JP Beacon.jpg

And if you were curious all the metal greeblies to include the beacon and LED's are rom the Etsy seller known as QuestDesignCanada (QDC). I felt they were good premium parts that didn't break the bank!

But your JP looks great!
(y)

Best,
-Iron

P.S. The pack shown above was a budget pack from Coz3D. I'm working on an upgraded pack from Boba Maker now!

H ! I have done my jetpack just with Edding Spraycans... I don't have a airbrush... but I think it turned out quit okay...
I also put a small smoke machine and LEDs in it... I am happy with it.
