Knee/Knee Darts - Question

Hi All, I just want confirm that the knee darts should face straight ahead, and not as pictured here (held flush on the surface of the block on the knee pad) ?

To get them to face forward is it best to add an angled shim to the block, or countersink them into the block ?

It takes a steady hand to cut the perfect circle on the knees which is why I have my wife do it.
