JSmails semi-accurate ROTJ Boba WIP

So i so I had to make toe spikes. Not a lot of pics and no finished pics except the suitup.

I cut a metal bar I found at Home Depot to 13cm's, twice. I marked the bend lines and drilled holes for the screws.

Here the bar is being bent into the toe spike shape.

Here they are installed on the boots. I glued the wooden spikes I made out of a dowel rod into place, then glued the open holes you see to the bottom. Makes it seem like a solid piece and that toe spike isn't going anywhere now.

I then glued two bolts in place on the back of the girth belt and made holes through the cod armor then bolted the girth into place semi-permanently. It's not ever going to ride up or slide down now. It's part of the cod piece. One less thing to worry about.

lastly, a quick suitup.

not much left to do.

How how does it look? Any constructive criticism welcome. Thanks for looking!

It's coming along nicely! I think the armor and flak vest could benefit from some weathering, like some sort of dusting with greyish black. Also I'd look at snugging up the flight suit, it looks baggy compared to the reference photo further up in your thread. You need wookie braids, and shin tools of course.

The armor has plenty of weathering and dull coat on it. But I absolutely see what you mean. Moreso than weathering, when you compare the photos, the armor paint looks to need to be sun bleached, or "faded".

Any ideas how to get the armor paint to "fade" without buying a tanning bed? :)

For the flight suit tightening, are you talking around the thighs? I agree with you there. I tightened up the calves in some pics further up and am afraid to go tighter there. I do need to "reseam" the outer legs this time around the thighs. This will bring the thigh pockets further from each other and look better. Plus it'll look better just not being as baggy.

Anyone have any any other tips for hiding the hoses? I sewed a thick piece of elastic up the sleeve then put a carabiner clip there. The hoses are taped together to a hook and clamp around the carabiner. Unfortunately the elastic/carabiner come too far down the sleeve when stretched and sometimes the hook and taped hoses sneak out. I don't like it.

Any suggestions on fixing that is appreciated.

Thabks so much for all the help! Time to find some shin tool patterns.

Actually what struck me the most was the looseness of the suit on your arms. In the reference pic the arms look fairly snug. Some tailoring there would help, but it might not be that important. I just noticed it is all. Can you shorten the elastic or something like that? You could try tying it in a know or two to test it out. I still have to do something like that to my suit.

For armor weathering try dusting grey primer and/or grey bumper paint, which has a faint metallic sheen to it. A little goes a long way.

Yep. I see it now too. Thanks a lot. :) lol.

I'll have to look into what "bumper paint" is.

I REALLY sewed the elastic in. I'm not looking forward to seam ripping that. :)

I figure I'll cut a hole in the top of the inner sleeve to lead inside the actual suit. Then sew the elastic inside the suit to the back. The stitches won't be seen under the flak vest. Then I'll have the carabiner stick out through that hole into the sleeve and clip it there, almost all the way up. It should look better and never sneak out.

There has to to be a template around here to make the tools out of cardboard. I'll keep looking.

Any ideas on wookie braids? I'm going to check Michael's tomorrow. If not there, hobby lobby.

Thanks for all the help!

Shin tool templates:

I used them and some simplifying and stuff on hand to make these out of sintra, a dowel, aluminum tube and part of a caulking nozzle (the knurled knob).

I was thinking about the way the ROTJ sleeves look. If you have slender arms, try padding/quilting the outer sleeve? Studying the pic I'm struck by how simplified ROTJ is compared to ESB... no sidearm, fewer shin tools. But then again it has more gauntlet hoses, a fancier jetpack paint scheme etc.

Thanks for all the help. I doubt my tools are going to look that nice. :) I used cardboard to make them. No pics yet.

I also made the arms slimmer and the legs slimmer with some sewing. It looks a lot more correct now.

And I took your suggestion to sew the elastic up. I tried a different solution as I said above, and that didn't work at all, so I folded and sewed the elastic higher inside the sleeve. The carabiner may be too high now. Lol. It'll be tough to get the hoses clipped in full costume. Easy for someone else to do though.

By my count, not a real long list left.

Build thrusters and attach.
Finish shin tools.
Acquire wookie braids and attach.
Sew shiny material on the backs of the gloves and fingers.

I need to figure out how to fade the armor as you had suggested. I could also run elastic from the cod to the backplate but I may not do that.

Last suit up took him 30 minutes with my help. We need to cut that down significantly.

Finally, what do Fetts use to transport all this stuff? I was thinking of using a wedding garment bag with two hangers for the flight suit and flak vest with armor, back armor, cape and the ammo belt. Maybe keep the EE3 in there also, but then it couldn't fold in half. Then I'd hope a 25 gallon Husky would work for everything else, or a Plano. The jet pack and helmet are really the tricky ones.

Thanks for any help and suggestions!

I worked on this all day yesterday and today. I don't think he'll be 100% correct by Monday, but he's pretty close.

I bought doll hair from Hobby Lobby and had my daughter braid it. Does anyone have and good pics of how they are supposed to be together for ROTJ? I'd even take some Woodman pictures of his scalps as I'm sure he's accurate. I haven't found anything definitive.

I finished all 3 shin tools that I felt like making.

Then I started on the thrusters today. They aren't pretty, but I'm just trying to get done. Here's my one pic before starting to paint and figure out a solution for the front of the ball.

So I worked on the suit all year and didn't finish. I got close, and basically took the summer off. I need to finish it eventually. Is there any good transport threads on what bin to buy and how to pack etc.? I'd like to transport his stuff a bit better.

Thoughts going forward....

I have to finish the gloves.
I have to put the greeblies on the EE3.
I have to weather the thrusters.
I have to get a divers buckle and strap that in there.
I have to figure out a way to take in the thighs even more.

I think he looks great everywhere but the thighs. He had a blast last night out in it. Looking at basic approval ROTJ CRL the suit isn't far off.
