Gauntlet Hinges:

I'm planning on purchasing a gauntlet kit soon and recently I saw a photo of a gauntlet that was hinged. Do these hinges come with some kits and not others, or is the hinge something we have to scrounge for seperately? Then how are they installed? A tutorial would be helpful if one exists, anyone have a link? Thanks.

As far as I know it just depends on whose set you are purchasing. I am also curious though how those who used the hinges attached them to the guants. and everything else for that matter. Some sort of fiberglass glue??

Most do not come with hinges. Usually, people do what they did for the real prop, they use velcro and "clamshell" the two pieces together.

However, if you talk to the builders, they may install hinges for you, for an added cost.

I know ruffkins will do that.

Industrial strength velcro will solve all your worries. My last set used the velcro, and it was difficult to pull them apart. I have saw a few sets where the hinge was riveted on.

I use hinges in mine. I just used JB Quick Weld to glue them in place. The hinge is just a 4-5 foot brass hinge that I bought at Home Depot and cut down to size with a Dremel cutting wheel.

Hinges may not be accurate...but mine is for a custom and I liked the way the hinges looked. You have to trim the gauntlets so they sit flat against eachother, then cut a small indent into each piece where the hinge will stick through. Once you glue it on (one side at a time) the two sides will sit flush together and won't leave much of a gap.

I did the hinges also. I think it's called "piano hinge" and I used a hacksaw to cut them down to size.
I used "Jet" glue, which so far has been no problem at all, to attach them to my gauntlets. My gauntlets are made of resin, and have some weight to them. If I do have an issue with the glue, I will be going to the Depot for some JB weld!:cheers

I used rivets on mine. They're not "screen accurate," but the rivets and hinge look cool like they belong on armor. Then you just paint over them, and do the weathering.

Thanks everyone. I had read somewhere that (as mentioned above) that particular person used piano hinges. I had no idea where to find piano hinges since the local piano hinge store closed-now I know, Home Depot...:p Anyone have a ballpark figure on the price for a single piano hinge? Once I get my first Rubies deluxe (although there's not alot deluxe about it) helmet and macrobinocular project done, I'll probably move on to the gauntlets so prepare yourselves for some questions as I'm new to this and need all the help I can get... :p Thanks again everyone, I'm confident the gauntlets are a project I can do myself with minimal cursing and frustration...

Cost is about $10.00...

Correct...I think that is about what I paid. Just head over to Home Depot, look in the hinge aisle and you'll see a big long thin brass hinge (most likely in a basket hanging off the side of the aisle).

I'm definitely going to be heading in the direction of hinges for my gauntlets and anyplace else they'd work. I initially thought I'd have trouble mounting the hinges on the gauntlet, now I can see that it'll be an easy job for the most part. Thanks again guys, once again you've helped me to learn another facet about creating Mando armor...

Your after small piano hinges.... home depot would sell them for sure and as stated around $7-10 each. I found ones that fit percfectly on to a set of my Ruffkin ESB gauntlets. I then joined the other side with velcro! Easy AS!!!

Cheers
