ESB Boba Thong/Knee Strap Color/Material?

Eagle

Hunter
Hello,

I was looking for clarification on the color/material for the boba thong and knee straps on an ESB kit. I was always under the impression it was white elastic, the same used on the knee armor. However, based on reference photos, the strap almost matches the flight suit. Not only that, but one of the knee straps matched the flight suit. The other is white.

Were all three straps white, dyed to match the suit, and was the left knee damaged, so they added a white strap?

The 501st CRL calls for a ¾ - 1" grey or bluish grey nylon or canvas strap for the thong. The CRL calls for white elastic on the knees. I'm mainly building for 501st approval, so I was hoping a 501st member could chime in. But any help is appreciated!

Thank you,
Tom

It's odd because the photo used on the CRL matches the image you've posted with what appears to be white elastic for the left knee and a blue/grey elastic closely matching the flightsuit for the right knee:

However, as you say - the CRL wording just says:

  • Knee Armor attaches via a 3/4"-1" dirty white elastic strap around the back of the knee and weathered according to visual references.
Maybe the colour difference was assumed to be a result of weathering? I would seek advice from your GML because it's not clear to me either.

They were all originally white elastic that were weathered in various ways.

You can still see the base white on the knee, so it's either just misted with paint or the dye rubbed into the elastic.

The other knee just looks white with an over spray of the orange/weathering.

Now, there is a chance the ASoW knee is the ESB knee repainted (notice the similar weathering patterns on the strap), and if so you can get a better look at the strap.

Which further shows the elastic is for sure white.

Further looking at the knee in CIV, that sure looks like paint.

Crusty, crusty paint? Kinda looks like it.

Now, why the inconsistencies? Who knows. Perhaps the paint (or dye?) wore off from the suit and on some more than others, maybe Joe just wanted to further the idea that all parts of Boba's were just found and random. Maybe one knee was supposed to not be used in that shot. Maybe he forgot.

This is fascinating! I just knew someone with deeper knowledge would come along and weigh in on this, so thank you for posting these great photos.

My guess for that paint, or at least what would be the closest, is the mystery ILM color that AX dubs "ILM Stormy Sea"
