Cod Piece Studs... Where? Why?

I am just curious. The consensus seems to be that the codpiece and kidney plate are connected via studs much like the collar plate connects to the backplate. My question is... what visual reference are people using to draw this conclusion? This area is covered up by both the Girth Belt and the Hip Pouches. The ammo belt would also be covering this up, depending on placement. I have not see one picture of these studs, so what I am asking is... how do we know they are there? It is generally taken as a given. Is that based on interviews with Jeremy Bulloch or Joe Johnston?

Some guys scratch build them from computer keyboard keys or adding machine keys. (They were believed to possibly be adding machine keys, or typewriter keys). I found a set of 6 made of white resin on the bay of E. Two for cod, 4 for collar.
