Still a ton of work to do on this but I finally got around to attaching my new dome to my scratch build. As I'm sure all of you have experienced, the idea of cutting a hole for a dent and two triangles into a dome that I just sanded for a week and a half is scaring the **** out of me.

I used Raf's templates for the sizing etc and have tried to place it as close as I can. Does this look good to everyone?

Also, is everyone just filling the dent hole with bondo and shaping it with a dremel? I have a feeling that my bucket is going to have quick a few pink spots on it for halloween

Infinite thanks to Raf and Alan and anybody who has an opinion on this.

I could be wrong, but I would decrease the sizing of particularly the dent by a bit. The dent often looks larger than what it actually is due to paint, weathering and shading, and one thing that always strikes me on a fresh new cast, is that the dent always looks a little smaller than you think, but then looks perfect once painted and damaged. The other thing you could look for is pre made dents - im sure someone was offerring them a while back. Then you could just drill a hole and glue and bondo it in place. Worth a thought anyway, but anyway you decide, good luck my friend! :-)

I agree with Jayvee! Although it seems in the right spot, the dent looks too big in comparison with the dome (which is a bit small) and the rest of the helmet. You used the 'dent assembly' or the 'dent placement' images? The dent assembly is about 7% bigger then it should because after cutting/bending and assembling into the dent hole (made by using the dent placement image), it has the right shape and size.

Ah ha! I did use the bigger dent. As for the dome size... I really wish I'd seen that before, I can see that haunting my dreams for quite some time. The idea of re doing it, however, sounds a lot worse for the time being. I'll try assembling that dent and start the long road to accepting that my dome is too small.

    Thanks for the input guys!

Not too small, just a bit smaller. I say this because the red rim is too wide (or thick). Just look at your image, especially in the ears area - the red rim is around 1-2 mm thick and not as wide as yours (around 8-10 mm?). I assume that when you started the helmet build, you didn't aligned the dome with the inner templates (the dome is somehow the extension of the inner part), and by adding the outer template, you automatically have the correct thickness for the red rim:

I'm not criticizing your work, just pointing out some parts that needs modifications, and you will agree me if you will look at some reference images from the Gallery.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I was offended, I definitely agree with what you're saying. I started this lid a year ago with resin and some card and have been upgrading bits of it as I have time. I (for some reason) decided to build all the upgrades out of 1/8" ABS and when I replaced the dome, I wrapped the 8th inch ABS around the dome, so that's the problem right there. That diagram makes a lot of sense.

You're the master here and I'm super excited that you even took the time to respond to my post. I'm not offended at all and you're definitely right.

I'm wondering if I should try to detach the dome and re attach it to sit closer to the edge of the red rim or if that would even work with the way I have the inside built. Hmm.

    Thanks again for the input!
