Girth Belt Belt color for ESB becoming difficult to match

I dyed this about 4 x with Rit and it just stays a tan/grayish color instead of the rich brown colorway I hoped for the ESB version. I've tried adding vinegar and salt and detergent as directed on the Rit instructions. This is a 32" girth belt that came from a local saddlery in solid white and I believe it is made of mohair. Help me TDH, you're my only hope. :]

No............the RIT dye will never work. The fibers will never take the dye. The best way to get the belt the color you want it is going to be with stain. And then most people use spray paints for weathering.

Go to the hardware store and get a can of stain and a paint roller tin or a tin tray. Put the stain in........put the belt in and let it sit, turn it over, let it set........get it good and covered then let it hang to dry. Clean the buckles and boom you have it.

I use a semi transparent concrete stain that I had custom tinted.

Yep, a reddish brown water based stain is what you want.

I meant to post a follow up sooner - the stain really works - this is a picture after one treatment and after it dried. I may add a second treatment to get some of streaks between strands - can't decide if I want to keep them (see picture), because in a way it created a worn/weathered look.

here's an image - I really want to put together a full-size esb ee-3 - this disney toy though I had fun taking it apart and repainting it... is much too small. :]

i didn't have any problems getting RIT to stick on my girth, it was real mohair. but the poly girth i did for a friends kid i ended up spray painting it.
