Active Hunter
hello guys i bought my new armor and i was thinking about how attack it to the vest.
for my last armor i used velcro but i also try magnets metod. i like magnets because this way i don't meed to cut or sew the flak vest but i really have some problems with keep them in the right positions because i have the metal harness so they go where the wants xD
do you have some tips for me for keeping the magnets in the right position on the vest? or do you suggest me to attack it with fasteners? thanks

I never liked magnets, I'd use snaps or vinyl bolts if I were you. The vinyl bots are also screen accurate.
i bought fettpride armor and with the armor he gaves me fasteners (bolts). but i'm scared about ruin the flak making the wrong holes xD is there a tutorial about this??

If the armour is moving, then the magnets aren't strong enough.
How exactly is the metal harness in the back affecting the magnets on your armour in the front?
I'm not sure i understand.

Random random question. Could these magnets destroy a phone if let's say I held it too close to the armor for whatever reason?

Some of the rare earth magnets are stupid strong. I imagine they could damage the phone if they were in close contact but should be OK to just have it near it. I put my phone in my thigh pouch usually and have magnets on my knee armour and my chest armour and it's been fine.

i mean when i dress the costume the magnets can go attracted by the front rings i used for straps lenght control

I use magnets. You can see in my build-thread, how I installed them. :)

did you glued the magnets on the vest for keeping them in the right position?

Yes, I used hotglue. Only hand-wash allowed. ;)

From personal experience, I believe the bolts are the way to go.

My first year I did bolts, but no grommets, so they were to firm and set in the position, so that pulled at the vest bad.

Next year I made the mistake of velcro....what a terrible, terrible idea. That pulled off easy , basically everywhere. I only use that for the tops of my knees to work with the elastic.

Then I tried snaps, and those held great, but the problem with that is you have to be rather perfect with placement as well, but those are 2nd best in my opinion.

But I have bolts now in my shoulders with grommets and the move great. There's enough space in the grommet for the shoulder to shift if needed, and that gives you a little more play when you're moving around. And they're a bit cheaper than buying a butt load of magnets

Just my 2 cents :)

Just out of curiosity as I will be at this point relatively soon....... Does someone have a couple pictures of this bolt attachment method? And are you referring to literal bolts and nuts to screw the armor plates into the vest? I really appreciate any clarification. Cheers! :)

I don't have any photos but yes that's exactly what they mean. Grommets get installed into the vest in the correct location and a bolt is glued to the back of the armor plate to line up and go through the grommet. Then that bolt has a nut placed on it so that it secures to the grommet and the vest. This is how the screen used suits attached the armor as well.

No problem. I've been trying to decide which way I want to do as well. I like the simplicity of using magnets but I just worry they wont be strong enough or that they will be a pain when I'm not wearing the suit. The bolts method would make sure that the armor wont come off until your ready for it to which I like but I also don't want to put a grommet in the wrong spot and mess up my vest. Also I have the same issue when considering using snaps.

I see Emme. I haven't had that problem with my set up. The US Divers Buckle hasn't been an issue of me, nor has the metal rings for the straps. I don't have a good answer for you there.
Once you glue the magnets on the armour, you don't need to attach the magnet on the inside of the vest in any way.
The magnetic force will keep it in place and it's adjustable, so you can tweak the armour placement as you go.
For the shoulders, knees and some of the chest armour, I used N50 1" by 1/8" magnets. They have 30 pounds of pull power each and are super strong.

Looking at building my first Fett and this thread has definitely been a tremendous help in giving me some ideas on the direction I want to go. Thank you!

Hello all. I just wanted to post a pic of the attachment method RS Prop Masters used on my ROTJ vest. I tried to get a decent view of the grommet, plastic bolt and nut. I left the photo at the original size to preserve detail, so it's a bit huge. I hope this helps.
