Pop Riveting Your Visor?

I saw a helmet recently that looked as if the visor was pop riveted in place rather than using the messy glues and epoxies. After looking at it for a while I started liking the look, if the rivets are set in a uniform manner that is. Have you seen others do this and are there any problems I should look out for other than the obvious? I realize I may have to heat up the visor a bit before I rivet it in place so it doesn't crack it etc...It actually would be alot easier for me due to an issue with my right hand not working and is desensitized quite a bit. I'm always afraid my hand will zig rather than zag and I'll have a visor with quick curing epoxy all over it...I've been ready for the visor for weeks yet keep procrastinating. Perhaps this is a way I can get my bucket completed without rancor...Thoughts?

I think you may be refering to Cruzer's visor? It had the acorn bolts on it, and looked really neat and clean. If thats what your thinking of, if I remember correctly, he had the issue of the bolt that was drilled through the mandables, would pop through the paint when he moved the helmet around. He figured how to keep in place eventually, but I think that was the main issue. I just used a hot glue gun, hasnt budged since, even in that christmas parade I did........in 85 degree heat and humidity...

i just hot glued my visor in. i've had 23 troops as boba and never an issue. i'd be really nervous about the visor and/or helmet cracking from the pressure of the rivet gun.

How did you guys spread the hot glue all at once and have time to set it in place before it hardened? Or did you just do a little at a time starting at the top and working your way down? I think it was Cruzers helmet that had what looked to me to be pop rivets. I'll PM him and see if he can point me towards the parts he used on his. If that fails to help out, I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with the darned thing...

Cruzer put small screws through the front then covered over the heads with filler. He then put nuts on the small bolts to hold the visor in.

It's just bolted on? Did he countersink the part of the visor so the bolts head could be covered with filler? You mean like Bondo or Bondo Filler Putty covering the holes on the visor? I didn't expect that at all. I put in a PM to Cruzer, hopefully he'll get a chance to respond and maybe I can get started as I want that visor in before I move on with the electronics inside and all the other finish work on it...

From what I remember, they are tapered head little bolts that he countersunk in the face then covered over with filler. I remember something about one of them popping out the face because they weren't glued in before they got covered. I'd CA glue them in real good. I remember thinking he was brave for drilling holes in that new (at the time) BKBT.

i just did it a little at a time.

my visor fits the helmet opening pretty much perfectly. so i just put the visor in with a small dot of glue in one corner. then i ran a bead along the edges.

What I did (should you choose this method) Is hold the visor exactly where you want it, and then, starting on the main body, the vertical part, I went on the sides with the glue (note: DO NOT GET GLUE ON THE VISOR!!), just have the glue be on the sides and the actual helmet only. After that, I went to the ends of each side of the visor at eye level, and sealed those ends off (some people like to leave it partially open for ventilation) I then proceeded to glue the top rim of the visor, and then finnished off by gluing around the whole visor for a complete seal. I should note that it is quite necessary that you hold it and glue it exactly where you want it, because I leanred the hard way, one mandable was slightly higher then the other. Prying off the dried glue is NOT fun at all. I can say with complete confidence that the hot glue is a VERY, VERy secure method of attachment. Good luck!

I feel Spidey Fett had a better method of visor attachment (can't quite remeber who's thread it was) using female screw posts. Anybody know the link? I used that on my son's Jango and it worked like a charm using CA Hot glue.

I may go ahead and try and use my small glue gun and see how it goes. If things go awry, I can bow out and seek help from those kind folks who have offered to help out-and thank you very much for those offers. It's very much appreciated-you have no idea... I was wondering if any of you have seen a small circular threaded sleeve which screws into kind of like a pop rivets head which you insert into the drilled hole and the bottom screws into it? It seems to me that they were used on skateboards at one time but it's been so long ago since those days of skateboarding...I thought that would be a cool solution if some could be acquired. You'd have a secure visor and have the cool riveted look. Go figure, I like the look of some types of exposed rivet or whatever on the visor...

Thanks a Zillion NikNak! I'm still a bit sketchy on a few points, but that thread and pics really gave me a better idea of how to at least get the tools and parts together and get started. I figure that between you, Cruzer, and everyone else, I'll have a removeable visor before you know it! Thanks again.
