Original attachment method, used for the ESB Hero helmet interior

That makes sense but isn’t this the top screw? The clip appears to attach above it

The rounded flathead screw, that sits flush with the bolt, can be seen in both photos, shared by me and RaffleFett.

Oh yeah, I lost sight of the original discussion over the ESB helmet, I agree this mock-up looks right! I’m just also trying make sense of how the ROTJ helmet differs.
 
Might be the screw and the clip was glued to the helmet (the post ROTJ helmet already had both straps missing and who knows in what way they modified the interior), but if you looks at the Pre-Pro #3 image (in the right down corner of the ROTJ image) there's no screw visible.

That was fast!
This looks like it could be an existing bracket...I googled “metal z bracket” and it might be possible to find something that works
