My ROTJ Boba Build

Here's the progress on the shoulders, I still want to add some of the scratch marks but other than that and a clear coat, I think they are pretty much done. I wish I had taken a "before" picture, because I think they look a lot better. I also have the chest armor pieces going, but I'll take pictures when I'm further along with them.

I've been working on getting the chest armor all done, I've had to make a few adjustments to the connections for the vest, the extra thickness made them fit me just slightly differently.

I've also repainted them (except the diamond, I forgot to grab it when I painted), trying to lighten them up a little. I've always liked the Hunt Club Green, but I also think it is a little dark. So my goal was to mix up a lighter green to mist over the Hunt Club. I tried to get the my green close to the Pantone swatch (2409 c) 501st has up for the armor green, but in reality I think it looks more like the Weyerhauser green, maybe a little darker.
Either way, I liked it so I tried it out and it gave the armor more of a medium green color like it should be, I don't think it's perfect, but I do think it is much closer. Here's some more pictures in different lightings, let me know what you think.

Hey all! Hope everyone had a good Easter, my family took a trip for the weekend and I had finished my repaint right before so I still have everything put away, but I am pretty happy with how it all came out. With that done, I decided to focus on my black braid which I didn't have put together quite right so I took it apart and rebraided it.

I also braided in the silver horsehair instead of painting it, I've kind of always wondered how it would look doing it this way, I think it came out pretty good.

Hey guys! Been a while since I posted, I've been gearing up for Comic Con Revolution! We went yesterday and had a blast, even the kids! There were a lot of people that wanted pictures with me and I got some good compliments which makes me feel pretty proud of the work I've done. My wife did get some pics which I want to share, but I do have to say there were some AMAZING cosplayers there and wish I had tried to get more.

This guys Maul is awesome, up close it looks so great! They both got their makeup very even too, I found myself wondering later if they had used body paint.

I was trying to figure out what to do with my hands, they wouldn't let the blaster in (yay California!) I think I look goofy lol

This dude said he's also a Fett, love to see your costume if you are on here man, also a fantastic Cyclops.

I was so impressed with the IG droid, but all these guys looked great! Fennec and Kelleran almost didn't get in the pic but I am glad they did.

Shoulder bell came unbuttoned, but otherwise I really like this photo.

and lastly, we met Young Boba himself, Daniel Logan!

I got him to sign my AOTC DVD and let us get a couple pictures since I was all dressed up. He's a very cool dude and it was really nice talking to him. Definitely a highlight of the day.

Thanks for reading as always, I'm gonna have to do this again next year we had so much fun, I do feel pretty beat though, I spent at least 5 hours suited up (though I did take a break halfway) so time for a little relaxin'!

A Tale of Two Helmets

Been a while since I've been on here, I have been working on something when I have the time which has been rare lately, lots of stuff going on right now for me. Anyway, I have gotten to a point where I would like to replace my bucket, my toy one has been great and working on it has helped me hone my skill, however it isn't very accurate. I also have been wanting to apply to the 501st and am very doubtful my current helmet could be used. When I got to this point, I always figured I would buy a Bobamaker helmet, instead I have decided to scratch build one. Couple things about that:

1. Due to my stature, I think a Bobamaker helmet would look big on me. I think my current helmet looks a little big on me and even though the proportions are wrong, I think it's roughly the size of a normal helmet. Scratch building one will also give me a clue as to if that is true or not.

2. It's the only piece of armor I haven't tried to scratch build yet, and I already had most of the sintra so I really haven't spent a ton of money doing it so far. Always a plus, right?

I decided to use Rafalfett's templates, which I had to slightly modify here and there. I wanted to use 3mm for the inside layer and 1mm for the outside. I had a few reasons for doing it this way, but essentially it all came down to my belief that it would lend to a better overall look in the end, it also still gave me a 4mm total with the layers together which is an absolute MUST for the templates to work.

I knew the upper cheeks were going to be difficult (which they were) but the best way I found was to curve it around the lower cheek first, then attach the upper to the helmet. I also used 1mm, the 3mm was too difficult to get that curve. I also scored a diagonal line from the corner on the inside of the upper to help that part fold better.

I wish I hadn't cut the T for the visor out already, it probably would have been helpful while I was gluing in the slices for the dome. It also made it lose some of it's flex there (which is why it looks all wonky), the mandibles need to be further apart on the bottom which should get corrected when the visor is in.

Now, I am not entirely sure what happened, but this helmet is smaller than a normal size helmet. Raf recommended printing Fit to Paper, which I did, and they seem to match up with the paint stencils I already have cut out, but many of the measurements are not correct according to his posted measurements. It has been difficult to tell with out the visor in, but it seems like the reduced size may actually look better on me. I also bought Machinecraft's Ears to hopefully put on it, but alas they will not fit. My Plan B was to put the ears on my current helmet which may eventually become a custom Mando or something, but I have been considering Plan C, which is build ANOTHER helmet and size the templates to the ears.

Tough decision, but it does beg a question: If I am going of 501st approval, what do they value most? A helmet that is proportional to the wearer, or a helmet that is the size of the original?
