If it looks at all lumpy with primer it will look lumpy with all the other paint too. I'd add more bondo in the low spots myself.

Yep...sand the hills and fill the valleys. Don't try to rush it. It can sometimes take a LOT of incremental bondo/sanding passes before it starts to take shape.

I would use a multi purpose filler, like a drywall filler. it sands super smooth with 120 grit with 1000 grit polish on top, mix it with a little PVA and it set like concrete,

Doing good on that, the pic on the left looks like a brand new helmet before its seen any action, looks fresh for a change
