Minutefett's New ESB

Thanks guys, but I'm no expert. Not by a long shot. I'm just a hobbyist who likes working with makers who are willing to take notes to improve their products for the sake of the hobby. We are fortunate there are so many. Our costumes wouldn't be possible without them.

Appreciate your humility but there's a pretty awesome ESB build thread that implies you're closer to expert than hobbyist on the sliding scale! I do agree that we are blessed to have so many folks creating awesome parts!

Was it ever determined the lineage of MinuteFett's current offering?

If his master is cast directly from an RS or MC G2 helmet, that makes the ones he sells a G4 right?

Or could he have taken his old G5+ helmet and scanned it, scaling it up slightly and modifying it create the new one?

Oh shoot I'm sorry man I completely forget about this. I'm actually working on the helmet right now, I just got his set of metal ears so I'm swapping my RS ears out for them. I can take some pics and do a proper comparison tomorrow. I did measure them a while back and they came out to just about the exact same dimensions. You can still make out some of the paint detail, so I'm certain it is a lineage casting, but the details are much fainter than my RS, so definitely not a G2, but I'll let the experts decide from the pics tomorrow if it's a 3 or 4. I find it hard to believe it's much more than that. It really is a quality helmet, and it's what I'm using for my build once RafalFett finishes his ultra stencils.

I did a size comparison with a G2 that I altered and the new MF, drawing an outline at their bases. As you can see, the sizes are comparable. How this works, I do not know. I was actually surprised by this result.

Okay OP finally delivers, sorry about the wait!

First off I'll start with the measurements. I'll always start with the pics of my RS gen 2, but for reference, you can tell them apart by the color of the interior and finishes of the exterior. The RS is uncolored fiberglass, while the Minute Fett (I have his deluxe offering) is chopped strand matt painted blue, which is accurate to the real prop. The RS helmet is altogether smoother and brighter. The MF helmet has some texture to it and is more of an off-white.

RS:MF Dimensions (cm)
Width, 24.9 : 24.9
Length, 26.2 : 25.5
Circumference, 75.2 : 75.2
Ear Platform, 14.1 : 14.2

In virtually every metric I measured, Minute Fett's helmet came out exactly the same size as the RS gen 2, down to the millimeter. The only real discrepancy in size comes in the length, but a every other metric is consistent, I don't think this is indicative of shrinkage, but rather the visor being less bowed-out on the Minute Fett. Given the main point of Minute Fett's restoration was the re-sculpting of the visor crack, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the result of visor being correctly fit back into place. It would explain why the prop in its current state seems to have less of a visible "flare" as it did during the filming of ESB, but maybe someone with experience restoring one, like Ord Mantell, can better speak to this.

Overall, if size is your concern, it need not be. I don't know how he did it, but Luis must be using some really good none-shrinking materials. The only real difference between the two is the level of surface detail captured in the casts. I took some side-by-side comparison photos a while ago when I took these, but since then I've received Minute Fett's run of metal ears, so I'll take some new ones this week of both helmets fit with their respective ears.

Thanks for the comparison. That is really interesting about the difference in length. I have the EFX helmet and that is MUCH deeper than 25.5 cm..

Also apologies for the delay in getting out the comparison pics, a few of the screws supplied with the MF ears are proving problematic, gotta grab some new ones to properly set the ear on

Ord, would you mind measuring exactly how long both helmets are from the front of the visor?

Per Baruopa's measurements the RS Propmasters is 7mm longer. They suspect MF correcting the visor is the reason for that. Since you also corrected it on your G2 I am curious if your G2 measures closer to the MF now. In your outline it looks maybe 1 or 2 mm longer.

Does correcting the visor involve pushing the mandibles inward?
