First scratch build

Times been short lately. Been busy doing life things. Had a few hours today to spare. Managed to bondo the rear, ears, and right faceplate. Still have some things to smooth out and finish shaping the r ear (had to build it up to flatten it out for the bits and pieces). Glazing soon to follow.

Heres a few photos from the end of today's session.

Thanks for the support. It's far from perfect. Tons of lessons learned for round 2. I'm still considering scrapping the earpieces and rebuilding them with just a frame and building it out out of bondo vice the mat board.

Coming along nicely. Finished with the helmet for the most part. Threw a few coats of primer on it. Now time to get the ears squared away. Still not sure if I'm going to work on the ones I have or rebuild then from scratch.

Thanks! Still quite a few imperfections that would drive me crazy if it were for me long term, but for a kids Halloween rig, it will do. They're gonna use and abuse it anyway.

Ok folks, I'm not ready for paint yet (I'll probably build the 2nd helmet AND prep/paint a car door for my datsun before hand) BUT, talk to me about masking fluid.

What is it and where can I find it. Never used it before.

Not sure if you already got fluids figured out or not, but here's a post I posted on some other thread.

Also as for masking fluid, pretty much any other brand will work more or less just the same, they're all liquid latex, just thinned slightly different and with different color tints in em. You can add your own acrylic paint to tint em yourself, few drops at a time till it looks how you want. Personally, I just buy some bulk liquid latex and then thin it with water and add acrylic purple paint to it, makes a pretty good approximation of Maskol. It can still be good to have at least a bottle of the branded artist stuff though, as it does flow and dry a little better.

So yeah, Maskol and the Winsor and Newton stuff are great and pretty popular, but you can just get by with some bulk liquid latex too. Personally I went with the 4oz Liquid Latex Fashions in white from Amazon when I got mine, but I see some offerings on ebay now for like a whole pint for 10 bucks. Probably just as good, if not a little more pre-thinned than others. As long as it covers a space so paint doesn't reach it, it'll work. Some people even use mustard and stuff for quick masks.

Whats more important than the masking fluid itself is the brushes you use to apply it. A good silcone clay-working brush for general application is good cuz you can just pull the latex off and re-use it. Some fine makeup brushes and flayed art brushes are good for more detailed and patterned strokes.

Cool. Thanks grim. I haven't had time for the bucket lately so I haven't even ventured into the fluid stuff yet.
I think Im gonna have to prep/paint a few car doors before I get back to the bucket. Should give me time to Amazon some masking fluid ;)

Hey yall, haven't been around here for a bit.
Finally finished that car door and been back at with these buckets to get em done for Halloween. Bucket #2 has been much better. The aforementioned delamination from the 3m spray is a real problem on bucket #1, especially on the rim. I nixed the spray for #2 and transferred the pattern directly to the mat board. The second build has gone much easier. Did have one hiccup. Dropped the damn bucket when I was sanding the back and blew out a seam. Ive hotglued it in place for now, but Im going to have to go back and reinforce with fiberglass on the inside to make sure it doesn't continue to separate and crack the bondo.

Last photo is where bucket #2 sits today. Was working on it yesterday when the transformer blew and I lost power in the workshop!
Plan to finish it up in the next few days and move to paint +visor.

Speaking of paint, Ive seen folks talk about toothpaste as masking fluid. Anyone tried that? Curious on its effectiveness.

pretty much anything pastey will work, toothpaste is an abrasive so probably not my first choice, but yeah, it'll work.

the only big problem with working with non-hardening masks though is accidentally smearing them..

Running out of time for the Halloween bucket, so it ain't gonna be perfect. Shaved the ears and top rim to make a more modern look (and selfishly save time). Glazed up here for the final sand.

There is no good way to get it off... that was the problem I ran into for 5he helmet on page 1. The most recent pic is a different helmet entirely where I used scotch tape to hold the template on an just used a surface cut to score it. Removed tape and finished the cut.

Side note, I've taken tons of pics, but posted few. One more spot to paint and she'll be ready for a clear coat! It's not up to Merc quality, but I'm happy with it considering the time crunch I put myself under.

Thanks! I put this latest together in about a week and a half from start to finish. Several days off work in there were used in this full time. Others got what attention they COULD after my 12 hr day (like today).

All I had time for today was the last masking and cheek paint. Gonna get a clear tomorrow followed by a visor and foam liner in my next few days off.

Hares how she sits tonight. Cheeks are still wet and the toothpaste still needs to be removed. I'll update once it's all ready.

It's not perfect. I've been in a time crunch and my hastiness can be seen in masking marks in some paint. Felt dry. Wasn't dry.
