Well I finally mustard up enough courage to change the visor as well.

I ordered two #5 shade green face shields id 8566 today from mfasco.com. I got two just in case I screwed up one.


I pulled back the lining around the whole visor about 3/4 of an inch back from the existing visor. I held the lining back in place and out of the way with duct tape. I used an exacto knife to cut through some of the stingey glue hanging on to the fabric to make it easier to pull it back. It's still pretty well intact and will easily fold back into place when I'm done. I unscrewed all the screws all the way around the visor. I seperated the two part visor as TK7602 said to do and it worked great. Thanks man! I made a nice template out of heavy poster board from the existing and placed in the mask to check the size. I made the template a little wider down the front because I plan on using a little more heat and getting slightly more seperation before I install the new visor...


Now's the tricky part. I'm not sure how I'm going to cut it. I've done a few searches on this site and I've seen dremel tools work or melt the plastic. I've read that tin snips may work but I'm not sure just how jagged that would leave it. I have a hand held plexi glass cutter but I've only used it on flat pieces so I'm not sure if I can score the mask with that?

Also I'm really not sure how I'm going to afix the visor to the mask. I like the bolt method in the other thread but I don't have a lot of room with the fabric that I want to keep aligned with the visor once it's in. JB Weld seems like a good option I would just need to cover the interior enough if I was going to tack it with hot glue while the jb weld dried so I didn't get hot glue all over in there.

Do you think I'd be able to use the JB weld without hot glue tacking?

Any suggestions for cutting this type of face shield or last minute encouragement would be most helpful! D

I almost forgot what is the best thing to use to clean fingerprints off the visor once it's in.

the shield will most likely be flexible. if so, you can just press it down flat on the table. i've used heavy duty scissors and xactos to cut welding shields. the "score and snap" method works well... make a cut with a ruler then bend the plastic and it will break along the line.

you should also have enough excess plastic that you can practice cutting around the edges of it. you can tape your template to the shield so that you know you're safe then hack away at the rest of it with whatever tools you like

awesome man thanks! I was expecting it to be a lot more rigid but it should be pretty easy to score it and snap it if I can lay it flat.

Like Brian said, they're pretty easy to cut. I've cut them with good scissors each time without any difficulty. Of course I'm built like a god so it's easy for me. Pfffft! Just kidding, it's easy enough though.

Can't wait to see this without the shield "lip" that MR put in! I like this helmet, but don't love it yet. With these mods though...

I would also like to figure out a perfect match to the silver that MR used so I could add some more detail and perhaps fix the dent (sharpen it by removing some of the paint layers).

Thanks man, yeah it's sounds a lot easier than i was anticipating. Unfortunately i ordered 2 of the wrong green tint masks before I found out about the #5 shade and ordered two more. I can practice on the wrong ones.

I'd be interested to see how the dent turned out with less paint with matching paint job. I'm too much of a chicken to try it myself.

I'll post pics of the Macgyver like toothpick things I used to keep the mandibles seperated when I use more heat on it to spread mandibles a little further.

I'll also post pics of the inside with the lining pulled back to show how to do it and hopefully I'll be posting pics of a sweet #5 shade green visor on my MR Boba Fett!

Probably this Sunday if I get the face shields in the mail this weekend.

well I'm finished installing the new visor in my MR Boba Fett.

Here's some of the pics of how I got there.

I used duct tape to peel back the lining and hold it back. I glued in toothpicks into the extra lip area to hold the visor in place at the bottom of the mandibles. Basically the visor width at the bottom is holding open the seperation so you have to be carefull the size you cut it. Luckily the toothpick thing worked on each side otherwise the visor opening wouldn't have been as wide. On the right you can see the little shims made out of three toothpics cut to the same size and wrapped with 3m painters tape I used to hold the mandible opening wider while I was heating it with a blow dryer. I used the one little shim behind the helmet in that pic to lower the left eye mandible area because it was a little too high after the first fix.

I broke my first visor I was trying to cut with a hand held plexi glass cutter because I didn't go far enough with the scorring. I tested scissors on it and I snapped my scissors because like MandalorFett said you need to have good scissors and the strength of a God and I have the strength of ten men so it didn't work out.

I used JB weld bond stick to adhere the visor to the mask. It covered the generic looking toothpick area I created nicely and you can see in the bottom pics there wasn't too much damage to the lining when I put it back into place. I just need to glue it back down in a few more spots.

Here are the three stages of my helmet from the horrible pinch to the first fix I tried and now today with the new visor I installed and the pinch pretty much gone.

Here some more pics of it! Thanks guys for all your help!!!! I really appreciate it. I was going to buy a whole new helmet and be out the $500 for this one but now I love this helmet!!!

Well Done. i actually backed out of the install because im planing in getting a different helmet for my mannequine. hopefully a FPH. but i feel the slightly altered MR looks fine for now

Can't exactly tell by the photos, but did you leave that extra little MR lip showing on the inside of the mandibles?

Yeah I left the extra lip. I was worried I'd really screw it up if I tried to cut it out. I pretty much only keep it on display in the glass case though so you can't really see the lip or notice it unless you wear the helmet. then it cuts off a little room for you nose.

I was worried the whole time that the paint would come off from handling it too much but everything was cool. It was actually very easy to make the larger seperation and I never thought or felt that it was putting too much stress on the fiberglass to shape it like that. I'm pretty happy with it now.

I picked up an MR lid and want to fix the pinch on it.
have any of you MR guys replaced your visors with the one from t-visor.com ? If so which one and how does it fit?
