New Hunter
Hello all
Thought I'd best introduce myself. My names Rhys and I live in SW england. I've been a Sci-fi and more specifically star wars fan all my life. Some friends of ours asked us to come down to St Ives for new years as everyone dresses up and has a good time. Initially we opted for DC Villains costumes but after seeing the options of female costumes star wars was offered up instead. Naturally I jumped at the chance
My wife called dibbs on Han Solo and I figured everyone and their mother would go as a jedi so I began to look around for what else I could do. I was reading a few EU books at the time with Kal Skirata in and fell in love with the Mandalorian culture, language, and general way of doing things. But I didnt want to do the usual boba/jango costume. I wanted something more individual. So after stumbling across the dented helmet I began to plan my own mandalorian merc commando costume.
Then last week whilst drinking with a friend who runs a movie/sci-fi shop(and who attends conventions) we got to chatting about it and he told me about the 501st garrison in the UK. So I figured why just use it for fancy dress.
I got my hands on a A2 piece of foamex from a sign maker and got a friend over to give me a hand with the various bits.
The foamex moulded a lot easier than I expected. I only had an A2 sheet to play with so I managed to get the knees, shins, shin plates, and thighs done from it but that's a decent start for someone who has never made a proper costume in his life. I'll put some thumbnails up below to the pieces. Had fun finding a pot big enough to fit the thigh piece in! they still look rough because the edges need sanding down. Incidentally if anyone knows a better way to cut foamex than a Stanley knife I'm all ears!
After chatting with the 501st folks I think I'm going to paint up as a specific character too. Perhaps Kal himself.
Going to see about getting some bigger foamex sheets this week and digging out the glue gun to maybe get started on the helmet. Hope you like the look of it so far and a pleasure to meet you all
