    ESB painted MOW Jetpack

Hi all, been away for some time.. it's always nice to come back and see all the great work on TDH, everyone here is so extremely talented; and its amazing to see how far the Fett hobby has come..

I recently recieved a PM asking if I still painted, and if I Only painted helmets?....
I still do paint and anything Fett related I would say is "game".

Here is a recent MOW Jetpack that I completed for a client outside of TDH.
It is completely topical (paint application) and there is no hard weathering, every color is painted...as I feel that the over all movie look is best replicated topically.
There are many many layers of paint on this pack, and different techniques used..

*I would be happy to answer any questions about what paints I used, colors, and what reference I used.
I think that would be easier than me just posting a color listing.

    Enjoy.

One of the best ESB jetpacks I've ever seen man (I usually don't like the one-toned jetpack, so I don't say that lightly)! Would you please go through your process a little more in detail?

Thanks.. and I think that a detailed outline would take a while.. but the ESB pack has always been my favorite because of the Depth of color, its more than just green...

Hey Nate, I def had the advantage of viewing your work in person. I def took your approach in allot of the washes and layers that were added, Good Artist steal from others..

    Man that is beautiful.
About to kick start mine once the weather fines up a bit.
I have a couple of questions, hope you don't mind.
    - What colour is the yellow you used?
    - Any chance for a pick of the bottom of the pack?

Testors had a formula color change sometime ago.. and before then I would say Floquil UP Armor Yellow... but the new mix isn't right according to color swatches (from a very good source). The closest color in my mind, after trail and error... is SP Armor Yellow (Floquil)... it seems a bit saturated at first, but once the weathering is applied it does what it's suppose to.

Here you go,,, this was taken early in the weathering process... so it's about half way done, but its the only pic I have.

    Re: ESB painted MOW Jetpack

I'm about to start painting my MOW pack this week during my spring break. I'd be very interested to know your reference source; so far the best I have are five shots I've collected from the gallery from the Bespin hallway shoot. I plan on doing a mixed technique of layering and topical but I was wondering what your strategy was for attacking the piano key section and only painting the tops of the keys (I plan on using rattlecans).

Same here! I see some orange-brown weathering on the bottom caps, but I can't see the weathered yellow. But maybe SpideyFett will share any reference images with that part...

Alex great work as always, just out of curiosity what base green color are you using. I love all the subtle coloring with what looks like rust, silver and what looks like grimy black.

*I do have one new pic that I am looking to get permission to show, .. working on it. but I think it will show enough of the bottom that its def a yellow "ish" color....

The green is good ole' Panzer Olive Green... seeing as how it's not being made anymore I had to stock up, and ended up getting it matched pretty close aswell.
For the lighter tones and splatter I used RAF Interior Green.
Every color is from the bottle... so no mixing.

I think the yellow makes sense...I mean the top is like that, the prepro and rotj have the bottom and top caps the same color. I did the last one I painted the same.

Well.. simply, hand painted. It really is the best way. Slave1Pilot can attest to that.. its just easier than masking.
For rattlecans, you'd prob have to mask it.

Yeash, yeah I do not plan on masking that entire section. Since I'll probably have to buy a bottle color then can you recommend one? Also any reference shots you could share would be amazing.

I have seen this bad boy in person and let me say that it is the best ESB jetpack I have ever seen.

    Re: ESB painted MOW Jetpack

Another question on paint colours if I may.
The red colour on the piano key area? I assume that this is the same colour used on the bottom of the thrusters, the part near the collar on the rocket and the horizontal stripe on the bottom right tank.
The other colour I am not sure if it is a blue or black. The colour that appears on the thusters around the centre silver/red part and the horizontal stripe on the bottom right of the tank.
Looking at a ref pick, the yellow colour on the sivler collar on the rocket. This looks to be the same colour as the yellow on the top and bottom of the tubes, do you see it that way as well?

Yes, the same color.. weathering should make it look different, as the collar on the rocket does appear to be darker. But the same base color would be right. Caboose (Floquil)

Yes, it appears black, prob is.. but the color I used was Brunswick Green (Floquil)

Yup, in the earlier pics I just forgot to add it on the Rocket... but yes. SP Armor Yellow (Floquil)...

Never considered that the stripe and thrusters ball details could be green!
Who made the thrusters end caps?

Brunswick "Green" is the name of the color... it's no where near a green tone.

    Looks great Alex!
How did you do the silver weathering areas? Did you use steel wool or sandpaper to get the scratches? I would love you to explain your techniques in those areas. I have never seen them done so well before.

    Thanks K...

And I did mention it at the top of the thread, but every color applied was applied topically, and there is No hard weathering (like sandpaper or steel wool) on this pack.
I think the trick is the steps in which I applied the silver, and the fact that I used 3 types of silver. (for different tones of brightness)

    • For example I used three types of silver colors directly from the bottle, the first was using a dry brush technique with very little paint on my brush (bigger brush is better for even strokes). I used Flat Aluminum for that stage (all the major silver/damage areas)... did some important weathering with a small sponge on top of that to ensure a nice "fade".
    • The next step was using Bright Silver, again using the dry brush technique with almost no pigment...additional weathering where it was needed.
    • Lastly, and for all the detail brightest spots/scrathes all over the pack, I used Chrome Silver. Applied that with a sponge and brush as well..less is more.

Whoops, I guess I skipped over the meaning of that. It looks very good. Did you use weathered black for the dark spot areas around the silver?

Also I hope to see that picture of the bottom of the pack!

    Another question please Spidey.
I have pretty much completed my jetpack now, just decals, installing the beacon, figuring out how to attach the rocket and weathering to do.
One minor point, I am trying to figure out the size of the white dot that is behind the stabliser? I have put one on it is about 5mm in diameter but it just looks a little small. Can you let me know ths size of the white dot please.
    Cheers
    Steve

    Re: ESB painted MOW Jetpack

Judging by the images while using Seven's template for the jetpack stabilizer I may say it's around 9 or 10mm in diameter:

    white-dot-jp.jpg

But these measurements might be off a bit...
