Boushh Scratchbuilding the Electrostaff

As mentioned in my introduction post, at the moment I am working on the electrostaff used by Boushh. Since there seems to be no accurate screengrabs of the weapon, I am going with a custom version inspired by many pictures I found here in different threads. Thanks very much for the inspiration!
This will be an "old-school"-build so no 3D-printing involved. Mainly because I do not have a 3D-printer (obviously ^^) but also because I like working with the different materials and enjoy seeing it come together piece by piece instead of just assembling a kit. This way I can create my very own personal and unique version.

I started yesterday with the lower section of the staff, using a very sturdy cardboard-roll and some bondo:





Today I coated the piece with sprayable filler, sanded some more, and removed part of the corpus so that I can later fit it to the main staff:

Can't wait to see the end product! Its nice to know that you can create so much with just card board, PVC and some filler. I may need to take this approach with an upcoming build.

I so agree with you on making things from scratch it is such a feeling of gratification to see it all come together.

My wife's first staff was entirely PVC tubing & fittings that was based off of the Hasbro & Sideshow 12" figures, which has now been replaced by a 3D printed one. There are only about 3 maybe 4 very poor screen grabs of the staff. There are some good photos of the tip but the lower section is left up to interpretation.

I look forward to seeing your interpretation of this come together.

@FettSpec: The best part about working with cardboard: It's so easy to work with. All you need is an exacto knife and woodglue. I remember that's what I used to work with when I was a kid and wanted to build my own proton pack. All that was missing at that time was the filler... and the patience

I am using cheap cardboard to make the stencils:


These are then transferred to 3mm plastic sheets. The DIY-story refers to them as "hobby plastic". It's very easy to work with. I am using an exacto knife and then clear the edges with a dremel.

Next I have to come up with an idea how to attach this to the staff. Usually I prefer screws over glue. Just nor sure how this will work with the cardboard roll. I guess I'm about to find out

Today I didn't do much worth mentioning. Just sanding and filler, sanding and filler... you know the drill ^^

Last step for today was adding another detail plate to the piece. Just like before I started with a cardboard-stencil. The second picture shows the plate glued into place:



Tomorrow I will spraypaint the box to identify the spots that need more filler.

Next up: Some greeblies, some tubes, some pipes, and of course... more filler/sanding.

Thank you for the kind words. I can't tell you how long I stared & manipulated different photos to try & get that as close to the movie used piece. A number of the features that I added to what I came up with were my interpretation of things. Some features I added in for strength & to break up surfaces.

I am sorry for the lack of updates for the build over last week. I worked every evening on the staff and simply forgot to upload new pictures. However I did NOT forget to take pictures of what I was doing. Here you can see how I built the tip section. The base is, once again, several layers of cardboard roll. This was coatet with filler and sanded into shape. Some other parts are made out of hobby plastic. The tip consists of a wooden pipe and and partly of an old exacto knife

Like I said: I worked on this build for the whole week and the extra hours paid off in the end. The staff is done and ready for trooping!

As you can see, I also used random stuff I had lying around. Like that green smiley-dome which originally was a bouncing ball This shall remind me of the fun I had building this



Yesterday evening I added color to the staff. The base coat is semi-gloss black. the "color chipped off"-effect was achieved with GW-colors (yes, I also paint minifigs from time to time ^^). The dirt/sand was also added with a wash of GW-colors. The staff itself got the same treatment.

Yes, it's interesting how a little bit of color can change the whole appearance of the object. The only thing I am not a 100% satisfied with is the staff itself. It's wooden and when you pay close attention you can still see the grain. The lower box and the tip however are not glued into place. They stay where they are supposed to be but with a little force I could easily remove them again. Maybe later I will switch to an aluminum rod or something like that.

But until then I'm happy with the outcome

No, sorry. When I needed a template, I just scribbled it on to some cardboard and used it as a cutting stencil right away

Only thing I could provide are measurements for the single pieces. Would that help you?
