If this is common knowledge then please ignore but I have found that regular old sandpaper works wonders on distressing clothing especially on edges, seams, pockets etc.
It wears the fabric down in the type of way that is likely to occur naturally.
The photos are the cape to my 12" Marmit Boba Fett figure. When it arrived the fabric was brand new looking. The damage you see is predominantly from sandpaper distressing.
