Nicks and scratches

I was wondering if it would be a good idea instead of sanding the entire bucket smooth, if it would work out if I kept some of the nicks and scratches from the bondo on so it gets more of that battle worn look instead of just the painted scratches

It's entirely your preference. If you were aiming to follow the templates for the damage, you may want to sand it smooth. Bondo normally raises the surface (at least for me...I have a very hard time sanding it completely smooth).

Saying that, it's all up to how you want your lid to look! have fun!

My bondo is so uneven and its a pain to sand smooth.

I hear ya. I've had some success with levelling it out, but it takes a lot of time

What helmet are you trying to smooth out? Is it a gmh and has the damage? If so I'd suggest glazing putty.

I agree with Fett 4 Real, the glazing putty is the way to go. Bondo is great for filling holes and general shapes because its tough enough to take some abuse, but the spot putty is way easier to smooth out and work with to get something looking nice.
