The way that I installed mine was that I took a drywall plug, inserted it in the post and trimmed it flush.  I then drilled a hole through the helmet and screwed it on using a screw and plastic washer.  The cap is attached by drilling 2 tiny holes in the top of the post and cap and then epoxied 2 small pins inside for strength.
